"Everything is going to change..."

Those words echoed endlessly in Emma's mind as she glanced back at Alby. He was trying, struggling, to give her a reassuring smile, the kind that was supposed to calm nerves, to convince her that everything would be fine. Alby just wasn't used to showing emotions, and his eyes betrayed him. They told a different story entirely.

He was scared.

They all were.

The low hum of whispers from the boys gathered behind her continued, murmuring in hushed tones that made her skin prickle with unease. Like her, it seemed they were just as clueless.

If they didn't have answers, who did?

It was dawning on her, slowly and painfully, that the number of answers she would get in this place was limited, if any. Yet, that didn't stop the boys behind her from speculating, endlessly.

They wondered where she had come from, why she had been sent to their glade in the first place. and what did this mean for their home?

The barrage of questions continued, each one more unsettling than the last.

"Alright, the show's over!" Alby barked; his tone sharp as he addressed the gawking crowd. "Get back to work, you dumb shanks. Sloppers, you're on box duty today!" His voice was authoritative, cutting through the murmurs like a whip.

Immediately, the boys groaned but obeyed, scattering back to their tasks. The last thing he needed was them making the greenie feel more uncomfortable than she already was. And their wandering eyes and hushed whispers were definitely not helping.

Alby's quick orders, while effective, seemed to be more for her protection than anything else. It was clear that, for her own safety, he would need to enforce new rules.

After all, these were boys, and she was the first girl any of them had seen in who knows how long.

Emma could feel the weight of their curiosity and confusion lift slightly, but it didn't make her feel any better. She was still an outsider in this strange, unsettling place. She didn't trust them, not yet, and their lingering stares didn't help.

As the boys reluctantly resumed their duties, Emma's gaze drifted over the area.

They called this place "home," but it looked far from it. Her instincts screamed at her to run, to get away from those boys. But she had no idea where to go. She didn't know if escape was even possible. The unsettling feeling that had taken root in her chest hadn't eased.
