It was Atobe and Tezuka. Two extremely good captains.
I watched in silence as Tezuka shedded his coat and stepped onto court with his racket. Atobe was on the other side with practically his entire school cheering him on. Honestly, it was starting to give me a headache.
Atobe raised his hand in the air and snapped his fingers. He threw his coat off and by the crowds outside the court lines.
"Be awed at the sight of my prowess!" Atobe shouted. I sighed and then took a seat on the bench, watching carefully. I know Tezuka's elbow is hurt, but I hope Atobe doesn't find out.
"One set match! Tezuka to serve!" the umpire shouted.
Tezuka threw the ball into the air and then hit it with his racket. It was super fast. I could barely see it. Atobe returned it with ease and a shot just as powerful. I leaned forwards in my seat.
As the match progressed, Atobe raised his first to fingers and placed them on either side of his nose. His eyes narrowed as he did so.
"What's wrong with your arm?!" Atobe taunted as he removed his fingers. I see. He must use that as a method to find his opponents weak spots.
Tezuka simply ignored him and resumed playing the match.
"I said, what's wrong with your arm?!" Atobe repeated a little bit more angrily.
"Nothing's wrong with Tezuka's elbow!" Oishi-senpai shouted.
"Ah. I see. So it's his elbow that's hurt," I heard Atobe whisper to himself.
"Tezuka's hurt?" Eiji-senpai asked with wide eyes. The rest of the regulars pummeled Oishi with questions.
Oishi-senpai finally caved and told the story. "He hurt it when he was younger playing tennis. An older member of the team had hit him purposely on his elbow. It was hard and repeatative. It permanently injured his elbow. He can still feel the pain at times if he puts too much pressure on it, but if he doesn't he can play perfectly fine."
"Tezuka's been hurt this entire time?!" Eiji-senpai shouted. "Why didn't he tell us? We could've helped him."
"I assume it's because he didn't want you to worry about him. He needed your focus on the Kanto Tournament if you wanted to succeed and win, to take us to nationals," Oishi-senpai said.
"GO TEZUKA-SENPAI!!!!!!" Eiji-senpai hollered. The news of his injury merely fired up our club members. They cheered twice as hard and you could clearly distinguish the regulars from the members.
He was going to lose. I could already see the pressure on his elbow like a black ball against the brilliant light of the sun.
The next hit and the racket flew from his hand and he dropped to his knees gripping his elbow. He gritted his teeth and then stood up, releasing his elbow and moving to pick up his racket again, refusing to quit.
He has such strength and perseverance. So much courage and hope for his team. And yet nobody saw underneath his grim exterior.
"He's going to lose," I whispered to myself. Ryoga and Ryoma nodded next to me. They seem to agree.
"Tezuka-senpai isn't going to lose," Eiji-senpai retorted.
"It's the facts, Eiji," I replied. "The facts don't lie. His elbow doesn't have enough strength to hold up the entire match. Especially not with the power he's hitting it with and returning it with. Not when his opponent is as strong as Atobe. He's going to run out of strength and lose sooner or later. I wish he wouldn't, but who am I to argue?"
Eiji was silent after that. And then he started cheering a lot harder. Taka Kawamura-senpai started waving around a large Seigaku flag and cheering for Tezuka.
And Tezuka started pushing himself to the edge.
The game went into a tiebreak. Neither of then managed to get two points in a row.
And when they finally did, it was because Tezuka's elbow didn't have enough strength behind his return and he hit it into the net.
"35-37. Game to Atobe! 7-6!" the umpire shouted.
I leaned back against Ryoga and stole Ryoma's hat, pulling it down over my eyes as I took a nap.
The next time I woke up, I felt strong arms carrying me and I was moving. I opened my eyes and looked up to see Ryoga carrying me towards his house. I wrapped my arms around his neck and fell asleep again.
