So the day after Ryoga and I had that moment on court everyone was bugging to know if we were dating. I never knew what to tell them so I always avoided them. I heard footsteps behind me and turned to see Ryoga running to catch up to me.
"Y/n, wait up!" Ryoga shouted. He caught up to me and flashed me his familiar smirk.
"Y/n, I have a request to make," Ryoga declared smugly. "I want to play a match."
"Against who?" I asked, clueless.
"Against you," Ryoga said with a smirk. I grinned at him.
"You don't know what you're getting into," I said playfully, shoving him. He rubbed his shoulder and pasted a fake look of pain on his face.
"I don't know what I'm getting into? I think you're the one who doesn't know what you're getting into," Ryoga grinned.
"And what's that supposed to mean? Are you doubting my skills?" I teased. Ryoga immediately tried to find a good answer and failed. I let him keep trying for the rest of our walk to the courts.
"Ryoma!" I shouted at him and Momo-senpai. "Can we use the court?"
He looked up at me as he hit an ace.
"Hai. Momo, we're leaving the court. Y/n and Ryoga want to play," Ryoma explained.
"Why can't we play doubles against them? They can' play against air, can they?" Momo whined.
"We can't play against air," I agreed. "But we can play against each other. You should know this by now, but Ryoga and I play both doubles and singles."
"The famed Nightmare Pair playing against each other?!" Horio shrieked as he saw Ryoga and I step onto opposite sides of the court. Within seconds of Horio's shout we had gathered a small crowd of specators. Tomoka and Sakuno were rooting for me and Horio was rooting for Ryoga. Kachiro and Katsuo were rooting for both of us. But I'm going to win.
"Ryoma, be the umpire please," I said to him.
He stepped into the chair and settled down.
"One set match. Echizen and L/n (last name)," Ryoma called. "Echizen to serve!"
I readied myself as Ryoga threw his ball into the air and then hit a twists. I stepped to one side and then returned his serve easily. We trained together. I know all his tricks and serves. The question is, does he know mine? It's a game of strategy and knowledge from now on.
I hit a top spin back at Ryoga and then twisted as I jumped in mid-air, borrowing Ryoma's cyclone serve that he used for the finale of the Kanto Tournaments against Rikkaidai.
Ryoga and I rallied over and over and over again, constantly making it to our returns and serves. We know each other inside and out, all our moves and skills, everything. This will be the hardest game of my life. I then smirked as I got an idea. I've been practicing all of the regulars' specialty moves in secret to surprise Ryoga. Some of them were perfected, but not all of them.
I settled my feet into the court and then hit a slice shot at Ryoga who immediately returned it with a slice shot, hitting the ball towards the side of the court only to wind back towards me. It wasn't perfect because it was a little off, but it was good enough to throw Ryoga off.
"Tezuka Zone!" Horio shouted loudly. "Y/n's using Tezuka Zone!"
"Actually, Horio, Y/n is not using Tezuka Zone. She has yet to perfect it. She's only managing to get the shots to return within a few feet of her so it's easier for her to return them without using up her energy and stamina," Inui corrected. I smiled to myself as I heard them. Inui was 100% correct. I couldn't do Tezuka Zone yet. The original was Samurai Zone, but then Nanjiro quit playing. But he was teaching me how to use his old technique in secret when Ryoga was out of the house playing tennis with the rest of the regulars and Ryoma. I continued using my own messed up zone until Ryoga switched the spin on the ball making my zone fail. I scowled at Ryoga and then cursed at him. The game was 3-4. I was leading, but Ryoga was catching up. Pretty soon we were tied.
I then switched to another move, Kaido's Snake Shot.
I swung my arm in a large swoop upwards and then the ball bounced off of the court and scored myself another game.
"5-4! Y/n leads," Ryoma called. Ryoga and I met up at the center of the court and spoke for a few seconds before continuing to walk and switch sides.
"When did you learn all of those shots?" Ryoga asked as he came up to me.
"When you were busy sleeping in until noon," I replied dryly. "Nanjiro taught them to me. I'm still working on perfecting his old Samurai Zone."
"Good to know," Ryoga teased.
"Yeah. Ha ha," I drawled sarcastically, moving past him.
I got in position on my new side of the court and then Ryoga served. I returned it with a small lob and he smashed it down as hard as he could, forcing my to use two hands instead of my left hand.
In the end, I won the match by one point.
"Good game," Ryoga said as we both moved towards the net.
"Hai," I replied as I held out my hand. Ryoga shook it.
"But next time I'm going to win," Ryoga smirked.
"We'll see about that, Ryoga," I smirked back at him, dropping my hand and going to the bench to get a drink. I spat the water out, it was lukewarm and disgusting.
"Oi, Y/n," Ryoma called. I turned and caught a Ponta he threw at me. I grinned and popped the lid, drinking it quickly and then tossing the can into the trash.
Momo yawned. "That match lasted nearly an hour! It was basically all rallying!"
"Then you missed the best parts," I mused.
"I did not!" Momo shouted.
"I used a version of Tezuka Zone I still need to work on and Kaido's snake shot, and you smash dunk," I said, counting my fingers.
"What?!" Momo shouted loudly. He then just walked away. I frowned after him. What a strange kid.
"Regulars," Tezuka called. We all moved and gathered around him in a semi-circle. "Go home and rest."
"Hai," we all replied. I followed Ryoga and Ryoma back to their house and then greeted Nanjiro before heading upstairs to Ryoga's room and sitting on his chair, picking up a video game controller and turning on his console. Ryoga clucked his tongue at me but then joined me for a few games. We stayed up until 11 playing games all night before finally falling asleep on the ground talking about random stuff.
