*Emery's POV*
"Yes, yes, indeed." I laughed politely and so did the woman opposite of me.
Her slightly uneven teeth showed vaguely, meanwhile she tried to hide them behind a forced looking grin. A tensed upper lip.
"You two are adorable." My student exclaimed, whilst hugging onto her mother. At her comment, Mateo squeezed my waist gently. He was quite flattered by other peoples comments on us, as if every statement was a trophy. "But are you really a couple? You look so platonic."
My fiancé's hand tensed, noticeably hurt by that.
"Lisa!" She cursed, blush flushing her face red as a tomato. "My apologies, I thought I had taught her manners by now."
Platonic... we looked cute, but not like a couple?
With risen brows, I replied, whilst the two were making their way towards the grill already. "It's fine." Yet if they heard it was a question left unanswered.
Another squeeze of my waist, earned me to look up, meeting my fiancé's eyes. He leaned in daring to plant a kiss onto my lips, however I averted my gaze, searching for a hallucination of a voice.
Didn't anyone call me?
My view was becoming hazy and I was forced to blink a couple of times, before seeing clearer. The warm breeze of summer hugging my skin, meanwhile my body was pulled closer.
Gentle summer days rushing by... A scent let my mind wander to places.
There he stood, while I watched him from the staircase, a beam decorating his face, as he talked to aunt Cassie. Wrinkles appeared on the outer corners of his eyes. She handed a plate of cake over. —it was that special birthday cake Cassie only ever brought with her when it was one of our birthdays. And I would be damned, if she won't give me the recipe one day. That cake was just chef's kiss.
Everybody loved it. Cayden and I always waited at the porch for Cassie to round the corner to our street. It did not matter whose birthday it was, we would always sit on the stairs and wait. Our ritual.
Auntie was not the greatest cook, yet that cake... oh it probably was just too sweet to actually figure how bad it was, but who cared?
My brother smiled widely, his teeth flashed, whilst our aunt told him some crazy story. She truly loved those absurd stories. Yet the second Cassie walked up to mom, who has not been standing far away, and he was alone, it was as if his mask fell.
A whole different side shone through his happy-happy-aura and being. His eyes were lifeless...
No. This wasn't true. He was happy on his birthday. He had always been happy! It was not like that. He enjoyed this day. Every day.
"Babe?" His voice brought me back to looking up, shaking my previous thoughts off.
"Sorry, did you say anything?" Knitted brows planted themselves onto my face.
"I asked, if you would like to sit with me and eat dinner?" A cute smile fell onto Mateo's lips.
My teeth captured my inner cheek between them, before I chewed off the dead skin on my bottom lip.
"I think I'm gonna go for a little walk. Go and eat something, and please don't wait for me." I grinned, whilst walking off.
On my way into the building I met almost everyone who was attending the BBQ. All kind of parents and mostly all of my students were passing by. So, naturally I was asked where I was heading to, now that everyone was sitting down to eat together.
