I shook it off ,and walked to my cabin. I grabbed the doorknob and took a deep breath before entering. Zero was sitting on my couch with her feet propped up on my coffee table. "How'd you sleep?" I asked as I went to sit next to her. She looked over at me with saddened eyes.
"I'm sorry if I overstepped." She said as she averted her gaze. "Thank you for covering for me. Did you lie to them?"
"No I didn't. Brian already knew you were drunk before I went to speak to him."
"How does he know if he wasn't in here?" She asked softly.
"He alone speaks to the master. That's why he is in charge." I said as I placed my hand on her thigh. "I spoke to him about everything. He did not approve my request for your transfer, but he did say after you finish basic you could move in. He doesn't want there to be favoritism during basic." My voice was nervous and shaky. The worst she could do was reject me. Why was I so worried?
"I'd like that." She said softly. "That is if you favor me?" She looked at my hand on her thigh.
"I do favor you, but at the moment I have to respect Brian's wishes. You may come here and stay whenever you want. We just can't be making things official."
"Jeff that's so unfair." She looked up at me.
"This life is unfair." I moved my hand away from her thigh. "We can still enjoy each other's company, just no titles. And no sharing anything that happens or is said in this cabin. It's just policy." I felt so shitty telling her that we couldn't be together, but Brian's word is law around here. I'd rather not be on his bad side. At least I could still kind of be with her. "I don't want you just agreeing to this just because of my status. I want you to agree because you want to try."
"I know Jeff. I don't care about your status. It's just a title, you are just like the rest of us." I chuckled. "What's so funny?"
"I am not like the rest of you. I have a much higher degree of training. I am a watcher of the forest. You are a protector." My head began to pound. Static filled my head. I stood up from the couch holding my temple. "I need to get some air." I said as I stumbled towards the door. I fumbled with the handle until it popped open. I left my house and stumbled onto the grass in front of my house. I was shown flashes of teens walking through the trees. I knew what he was trying to tell me. I stood up slowly and rushed over to Tim and Brian's cabin. I heard a rumble coming from inside, so I leaned on the porch railing. I waited for around ten minutes before Tim stepped onto the porch.
"Why are you always on my porch?" He asked as he pulled a cigarette from his pocket. He lit the end and inhaled the smoke.
"Because I like it. The master came to me. Teens in the woods it looked like." I said as I looked into the woods beyond Tim.
"You are more then capability to wipe them out." As Tim finished his sentence we heard rustling near the compound's wall. "Shit." He said as he lead me into their cabin. He rushed into their room and next thing I knew Brian entered the living room. He was fully dressed and was holstering his pistol. "They sounded close Brain."
"Alright. Tim you got your gear, Jeff you got your gear?" Brian turned his attention towards me. I nodded and lifted my jacket to show my blades that were holstered to my waist along with my pistol. "Good let's roll." He led us from the cabin into the woods. We followed him until we saw the glow of a fire. He pointed at the trees, he was signaling that he is gonna climb. We both nodded as he began to scale the tree. He was like a god damn monkey.
We followed him from the ground. I felt myself step onto a stick. I retracted slowly, but it was too late. The stick snapped loudly. The teens were close enough to be alerted by it.
"Did you hear that?" A male voice asked the two girls that were with him.
"We shouldn't have come out here. It's spooky." A girl in a white hood said. "They probably aren't even real. We should just go home."
"If he's not real why are his papers everywhere? If we can find the mansion we could be rich!" He exclaimed.
"If he was real why haven't we seen him?" A blonde teenager questioned. "Shouldn't he be after us? I mean we collected all 8 pages." Brian chirped like a bird in the trees to let us know he was going to descend. Instead of climbing down carefully he leaped from the trees into their campsite. "Who are you?" She asked as Brian began to approach the white hooded female.
"Oh my god they are real." The woman uttered as Brian approached her. He lifted his mask up slightly. "He works for slender man."
"Do not say his name. It will only anger him." Brian said softly. "Frankly I already have a migraine." I looked over at Tim as he began to vomit blood. I saw Brian turn quickly to face the trees.
"Are we safe here? I mean it says that he basically adopts teens in distress. He will protect us from you." The male has a voice that challenged Brian's.
"You kids are so wrong about the monster he is. He doesn't adopt us. He controls us. And I am safe here, however you are not. Well not all of you one of you will live, but you will become part of the forest."
