Part 12

Chrissy, Steve, Robin, and Nancy were driving in Steve's car to Nancy's house. Nancy sat in the back with Chrissy while Robin sat in the passenger seat. The group decided to go for a late night swim at lovers lake and then they were to spend the night at Eddie's friend's house. The only hurdle was Chrissy didn't have swimwear and she couldn't go home to get any since she was supposed to be at Sam's for the night. Thankfully Nancy spoke up and offered to let Chrissy borrow a swim suit. So the plan was set in motion. Steve would take the girls to Nancy's house, meanwhile Eddie, Argyle and Jonathan would go and get something to eat, drink, and then they would meet at Rick's house to keep the party going. Chrissy was hesitant to leave Eddie, especially going with people she hardly knew, but she didn't make that known. She was used to keeping things supressed.

On the drive to Nancy's house Robin and Steve made small talk up front. They talked about their new job at the video store, they were both excited to get out of scoops. According to Steve it wasn't a good place to meet girls. Robin agreed with him, which resulted in Nancy clearing her throat. Robin looked back and winked at her. Chrissy stayed silent for most of the drive. She knew Nancy somewhat, but not enough to be super comfortable around. They'd only talked a few times when Nancy came around the cheer team for the school paper.

Nancy, being who she was, was extremely curious about how Chrissy and Eddie started to hang out. They seemed like an unlikely pair, a pair that never should've happened, so how did it? Nancy looked at Chrissy and just decided to ask, subtly never was her strong suit.

"So, Chrissy, how'd you and Eddie meet?" Robin and Steve went silent as well, everyone was curious. Chrissy felt like a deer in the headlights. "Um.. well.. I needed help and he, helped me." She nervously chuckled. She hoped that would satisfy their curiosity but Nancy wasn't even close to satisfied. "Helped you how?"

"Nance" Steve said, obviously a bit annoyed. Robin took note of his tone but didn't say anything. "What? I just wanna know Steve" Nancy said back before turning her gaze back to Chrissy. She felt her cheeks getting warm. "I guess I needed somewhere safe, and he gave that to me" Thankfully before Nancy could question her more, they pulled up to her house.

"We're here. Hurry up Wheeler." Steve said, that annoyed tone still in his voice. Nancy didn't reply to him, instead talking to Chrissy. "Come on, let's go find you something. Robin, are you coming?" Robin looked back "nah, I think I'll wait out here if that's okay?" Nancy smiled and nodded. She and Chrissy went inside.

Robin turned to Steve, "Alright dingus what gives?" She said. She knew when Steve was in a shitty mood, and she couldn't figure out what his problem with Chrissy was. She had been nothing but nice to everyone since they picked her up. He sighed "what are you talking about Buckly."

"You know what I'm talking about. You've been shitty ever since you saw Chrissy, what's wrong?" Steve shook his head. "I don't know, I just don't see why Eddie brought her." There was extra emphasis on Eddie's name. "Why? You into her or something?" Steve scoffed. "No I'm not into her."

Suddenly it all made sense, Robin looked pleased with herself for figuring it out. "Holy shit.. holy shit! You like Eddie, don't you?" Steve didn't answer. He just looked ahead. He'd been questioning his sexuality ever since he met Eddie, maybe he really was into him. "Steve, it's okay if you are. But you can't treat her like shit because of it." Robin tried to be kind but firm. Sometimes Steve needed that.

"You're right. It's just, hard I guess. I was hoping when he invited me, I don't know, I was hoping something might happen, ya know?" Robin nodded and rubbed his shoulder. "Welcome to queer life Harrington, that shit never goes away."
