Chapter 49. Feeling Awful

Doctors give patients a number of things. We give them medicine, we give them advice. And most of the time, we give them our undivided attention.

In the hospital, Elijah and I are in the cafeteria.

I sit at the table alone while Elijah is getting for us breakfast.

Kevin and Cassandra my intern standing together talking.

Cassandra says "It's a cat with a piece of bread around its head."

Kevin says "I know. It's called breading."

Cassandra says "It's totally super cute and weird. People put bread around their cats' heads and then take pictures."

Kevin wonders "Why? What? How?"

Cassandra calls out "Hey, Dr. Mikaelson, you're cutting."

Elijah says "You talking to me?"

Cassandra loudly "Yes, Dr. Elijah Mikaelson. There are all these people waiting in line for coffee. What-what makes you think you can cut ahead?"

I turn giving my attention to them.

Elijah smiles "I didn't know there was a line."

Cassandra says "Well, now you do."

Elijah walks towards me and put the tray at the table "Your interns"

I say "I told you, hate them"

Cassandra to Kevin "Could you tell?"

Kevin asks her "What?"

Cassandra says "I totally have a crush on that guy. Was I acting all shy and giddy? I get like that with guys I like."

I widen my eyes and Elijah tries not to laugh as we hear them.

Kevin annoyed "You were acting rude. Or I get the opposite. I don't know."

Cassandra says "I don't know how I act."

I to Elijah "Cassandra you are done" I move my hand.

Elijah holds my hand "Not magic in public and here. You are not in the mood in days."

But by far the hardest thing you can give a patient is the truth.

I say "Yeah, whatever."

Elijah says "Lydia, you're not controlling your powers"

The truth is hard. The truth... is awkward. And very often...the truth hurts.

I say "Maybe my energy is out of control"

Elijah says "You should go the church and tell Blackwood and maybe there is something"

I sigh and take a sip from the coffee "I will call him"

I mean, people say they want the truth. But do they really?

I'm at the nurse's station with my interns "MacKenzie, you're in the pit. Michael, need you in ortho. Kevin, you're on scut. Lexie, labs"

Cassandra asks "What about me?"

I smirk "You're my shadow today. Move, people but now you will run these laps"

I give her a lot of papers and charts "Quickly, Dr. Cassandra"
