[Ten years ago]
"Sis, sis! I finished the book! Do you have another?" I asked, running into her room. Woven tapestries covered the walls. Sis and Mom made them, back when Mommy was still alive.
"You did? That was quick."
I rubbed the top of my head and laughed. "I loved it. Though, there were a few words I couldn't make out."
"Really? Show me which ones."
I sat beside her on the bed and opened the thin but wide book in my hands. A little bird peeped as it looked for his real family. His egg had rolled out of the nest, leading to him hatching alone. If not for the help of a mama turkey, he would've died.
"This one. I read it as 'perk'."
My sister laughed. "It's perch."
"Ohh! I should've figured that out based on the context..."
Sis patted my head. "Yeah, context helps a lot when it comes to reading. What else are you unsure about."
I opened up another page. We repeated the process until we finished the book. In total, I'd messed up ten words.
I leaned my head against my sister's arm and hugged her. "Thanks, Sis."
She smiled back and patted my head. "It's no problem, baby."
I pouted. "I'm not a baby anymore! I'm six!"
Sis yanked on my cheeks. "Aww, you'll always be my baby brother."
I giggled. "So, got any more books?"
"I do, but you've read all of the ones for your age already. You probably won't understand the others."
She had a point. My reading was too sucky for big kid books.
Sis put an arm around my shoulders and grinned. "But I can read them for you!"
"Yippee!" I yelled, snuggling her. "You're the best sis that a kid could ask for!"
"Aww. You're just saying that."
"No, I mean it!"
She ruffled my hair and put me on her lap. "And you're the best little bro a big kid could ask for."
I giggled. "I'm glad!" I pressed my head against her shoulders. "Sis. Please don't leave me too."
She hugged me tightly. "I won't, baby. I wish that more people could see your charm. Hopefully, you can make many friends like the baby bird one day."
"I don't need friends! I only need you!"
"Aww, don't say that. You'll still have me around."
"I will?"
She poked me on the nose. "Yeah! It won't just be me who is by your side."
I swungs my arms up. "Then I want friends!"
