My mom had made sure Lydia was okay. She ran every test she knew to check if she was a wolf or not. I didn't feel any real relief until I found out she wasn't.

It felt like one thing in my life was finally going right. I honestly didn't know what I would've done if Lydia turned out to be a wolf. I could barely handle the fact that Isaac was one.

My brain hadn't fully processed it. The only thing I could tell myself was I'll handle it later. But there was no later. There was no handling it. It was what it was, and it couldn't be undone. I think I was in denial. I couldn't accept it yet — I didn't want to.

So for now, all I focused on was Lydia. Her mom had let her spend the night at my house, and it was almost impressive how she tried to act like nothing happened. That was just Lydia. But I wished she'd talk about it.

"Lydia, are you sure you don't want to talk about it?" I asked again, watching her at my vanity.

"Yes, I'm fine, Lina. Really — stop asking," she said, turning around with a smile. "Instead, tell me what happened with Isaac. You two have a night out or something?"

I went quiet. I hated that Lydia didn't know what was actually going on — but I couldn't involve her. And honestly, I liked it that way. She was the only thing that kept me tethered to normal.

"Don't tell me you ruined it!" Lydia exclaimed with a teasing, disappointed tone.

"No, we were fine. Well, Tyler ruined it, but then we were good... until... well, his dad passed away. I haven't talked to him since." I stared down at the floor, wondering how Isaac was doing. I knew he wasn't okay. He was probably pretending around Derek and whoever he was turning.

"Oh... where's he at now?" Lydia asked, getting up from the chair to sit beside me.

I just shrugged. "I don't know if he even wants me to check on him."

"I think he does. I mean... if I ever lost... someone," Lydia paused, sighing softly, "I'd want you by my side."

I smiled at her words, wishing it could be that simple with Isaac. But it wasn't. It was way more complicated than that.

"You sure you'll be okay at school today?" I asked, and Lydia nodded.

"I'll be great. Come on, let's go," she grinned, grabbing my arm and pulling me off the bed.

I grabbed my bag and followed her downstairs. In the kitchen, my mom sat at the table, rifling through some papers that she quickly shoved aside when she heard us.
