He was surprised by the odor of fresh paint. He had never smelt fresh paint. He just knew it was that. This smell was of renovation. But he had no clue of this. He entered to look at a house emptied of quite a bit of furniture. The skeleton that was needed for sustenance was only present. The walls were now white with no color. It seemed cold to him. Not a welcome change at all. His face twisted into a grimace.

Shaurya- Yeh sab!

He could not hide his disappointment.

Shaan- Shaurya! Group project hai. Aur sabse important group member Patiala mein tha. Isliye complete nhi kar paaye hum. Tumhara intezaar kar rhe the. Ussi ke hisab se ghar ko paint karwaenge. Since abhi yahin rehne ka iraada hai so why not?

Shaurya- Sach dad?

Shaan- Hmm. Bas ek liberty li hai ki Aastha aur mera kamra ready karwa diya. Tumhara area aur common areas sath mein renovate karwaenge.

Shaurya- Thanks dad! Achaa laga. Finally. Our house! But iska matlab mom will be staying soon yahan right?

Aastha- Hmm. Apne bete se bohot dur reh lia. Abhi aur nhi!

Shaurya- Pehle aapka kamra dekhna hai. Chaliye dikhaiye.

Shaurya walks in. It was a room done in white with some violet accents done in it. A large bed with a violet sheet again and 2 bedside tables on either side in dark wood. There were yellow lamp shades on either side and there was his picture on one side which was definitely his mom's side of the bed. There was nothing on the walls but a collage of all his memories on one frame. There was light brown cupboards and a table with a chair with a lamp again and drawers. It felt calm. The vibe of the room. Not warm. He wanted warmth in his rooms after the colorless, devoid of personality in the Sabbarwaal house.

Aastha- Lagta hai tumhe pasand nhi aaya? Par abhi baki ghar baki hai. Kuch sabke hisab se hi karenge.

Shaan- Haan Shaurya. Interior Decorator aa rha hai pandra minute mein.

Shaurya- Dad but humara taste bilkul opposite hai. Agar mein aap dono ke sath bada hota toh mera bhi aisa taste hota.

Shaan- Par Shaurya tumhe loud colors pasand nhi. Tumhe blues bohot pasand hai aur violets and calming colors. Aisa hume laga.

Shaurya- Yes dad but pata nhi I want a home that is imperfect. Where I feel allowed to be imperfect. That is tender and warm. And with cheap and basic stuff and expensive stuff. Just all kinds of stuff. Too much stuff. Maybe where we struggle to move around and are forced to be closer to each other. Not like Sabbarwaal house jahan phone chahiye even to talk across rooms or chilake baat karna pade taki samne wale sofa mein awaaz pohonche. Bas jahan dher saara pyaar ho. Aur mein rahoon. Sahi maino mein. Where I feel I can be who I am. Where I can see who you and mom are.

Aastha- Shaurya! Sahi kahan tumne. Aur aisa hi banaenge hunare ghar ko. Doosre kamron ko.

Shaurya- How about like pale yellow walls with like a chestnut brown sofas, very close to each other. And like 2 nice bean bags. And a centre table for mom ke chai and pakode. And like a wall for books and novels. And a large screen TV. And nice sound system. And like pale green cushions with like a little bit of gold. And like lots of stuff. Like sculptures or like some antique stuff. I basically mean some art. That mom can pick.

Aastha- Ek idea hai. Mehenga toh nbi hai. But mein pottery karti hoon. Toh mere kuch pots display karoon? Agar tumhe accha lage toh.

Shaan- Perfect. Tumhara touch. Mere mein kuch artistic nhi isliye mera koi touch nhi ho paega.

Shaurya- Dad but you remember woh vase jo aap laaye the woh display karte hai. And you know I want this to be really insane. So you know I have these coffee cups. I got with Anokhi. She isn't family but still. Every date we buy a different mug. I mean a pair. So I wanted to put a few of those in the living room. I hope it's cool?
