Chapter 7

By the end of the school day I walk up to the Tourney pitch with Carlos to meet with Ben "thanks for coming with me" Carlos says I shrug "just be glad I'm not bringing my dog with me" I tell him and he moves away a bit. We get to Ben and I sit on the floor while Carlos gets pointed to where he has to start. "Okay. Carlos, we're gonna do some sprints. You ready?" I watch as Ben starts timing Carlos as he runs "Oh! Ah! No, wait!" I watch a dog chase Carlos and I instantly start laughing "sweet... Why are you laughing?" Ben asks as I stand up as Carlos runs past me. "no ah!" Carlos screams. "Carlos? Carlos!" Ben calls. "he's being chased by a dog," I explain after calming down and sprinting after him. "no, stop!" Carlos calls "Carlos!" I call as I see him in a tree. "Nix? Ben?" He asks, clearly afraid as Ben picks the dog up "Whoa-Whoa-Whoa!" "Ben, Nix help me! This thing is a killer! He's gonna chase me down and rip out my throat. This is a vicious, rabid pack animal!" He cries "Hey, who told you that?" Ben asks "my mother" Carlos replies "Cruella" I translate "She's a dog expert. A dog yeller. Why are you holding him? He's gonna attack you!" Carlos gasps "Carlos, you've never actually met a dog, have you?" Ben asks, "of course not. " "Dude, meet Carlos and Nix. Carlos Nix, this is a dude. He's the campus mutt" Ben says "I have a dog, he's pretty big" I smile "who's looking after your dog?" Ben asks as he hands Dude to Carlos "my mother, wants me to look after him" I explain "He doesn't look like a vicious, rabid pack animal. Jeez. You're a good boy, aren't you? You're a good boy." Carlos says to Dude "I guess you guys have it pretty rough on the island. " Ben sighs "Yeah. Let's just say we don't get a lot of belly rubs." Carlos replies, "Good boy. I mean, you're a good runner. You're... you're fast, you know." Ben asks as I leave to go back to the dorms or to find my mother, whichever happens first "hey, how come you've been avoiding me all of today until recently?" "Headmistress wanted me to help out, so I sat there being support for Carlos from afar" I shrug "can we talk about yesterday?" He asks "there's nothing to talk about, I left so you and Audrey can talk things over and if you want me to apologize to her then fine I will but if not then I won't" I firmly tell him "Nix, you should probably apologize," Persephone says "Jesus Christ mother do you seriously have to appear out of nowhere?" I ask "yes, anyway Cerberus will be with you until winter, he will be guarding your dorm and you when you are with him alone or if you call for him" I nod "Mom, meet Ben, Ben meet my mother Persephone" I smile introducing them "it's lovely to meet you Ben" she smiles holding out her hand "it's lovely to meet you as well Persephone" he replies shaking her hand "Nix, I will be back in a few days so be a good girl and don't get into trouble while I'm gone" she warns "yes mother" I smile "I spoke with your sister, she's trying to understand the situation. Be kind to her" I groan "okay, you should go before your mother worries" I laugh "yes, farewell" she says before disappearing into thin air "sister?" Ben asks "yeah, Mal, she's my twin. I thought you knew, maybe I never told you" I shrug as we enter the dorm block "well. I have some things to do, maybe we can hang out later" I smile "yeah sure" he smiles "and if you ever need somebody to talk to about anything, my door is open" I laugh before walking into Mal and Evie's dorm "you are close to him, maybe my plan will work. I haven't been able to go over it with Evie, she's far too busy but what if we make him fall in love with you with a cookie" I raise an eyebrow. "You can't back out, you already agreed to help me get this wand" I sigh as I nod "we're sisters in crime" I laugh a bit as I grab her spell book and look at the love cookie recipe "this seems easy enough," I tell her "I'm glad you think that" "have you ever wondered if maybe we have a better chance of being who we want to be here then what our parents want us to be if we free them?" I ask "I've never thought about it but you know we VKs can't let our parents down "our dad wants me to have a better life," I tell her and I watch her look upset "but I will help you because we're sisters" I smile as I hug her "you can borrow my mom if you ever change your mind, Persephone is much better" I close the book "come on let's go get the boys and make these cookies!" Mal grins before running out. I get up and follow her "wait, shouldn't we wait a little bit, people are still coming back from after school things, just get them into your dorm," I tell her "good idea" I return to her dorm and sit on the bed
