Tony looked up, as he caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of his eye. He knew that it wasn't Bruce. He was beavering at his desk in his own part of the lab. He knew that it wouldn't be any of the others. It was usually only he and Bruce that were crazy enough to be working at this time of night. And no one would come down to the labs, even if they did feel the need to be awake. No, he knew who it was. It was her. His guardian angel.

He had been able to see her since he was little. The tiny boy captivated by the exquisite creature that would come and watch over him in his bed. The female that would sit and smile at him as he would create. Never saying a word. Just nodding in all the right places, as he would show her what he had done.

He had seen her throughout his life. She had always been there when he needed her the most. Tony putting the fact that he was still alive down to her intervention. The billionaire sure that he should have died a hundred times over already. That he should have died in Afghanistan when the insurgents had attacked his convoy. That he should have died when the Stark Industries missile had landed next to him, and the shrapnel lodged itself close to his heart. He should have died during the operation that attempted to remove that shrapnel. He should have died while he was held by the Ten Rings. When he was kept alive by a car battery and an electromagnet. When he found himself walking through the desert after escaping his captors in the suit he had created out of his own company's weaponry, and so many times since then. The billionaire thanking her, every time that he managed to drag his ass out of whatever trouble he had gotten himself into this time.

"Hi, (Y/n)." Tony called out, as he swallowed a handful of blueberries. Using the name for his guardian angel that he had called her for as long as he could remember. He was never actually sure that it was her real name. Or if guardian angels had names at all. But she had never protested. The delicately floating, white clad female, merely smiling as he said it.

"What did I do this time? I've been on my best behaviour. You should know that." Tony smiled, as he caught another glimpse of the angel moving around all his ongoing inventions. The billionaire sighing, as he took a seat on the sofa, that was next to his workstation.

He had always wished that she would, could speak to him. That if he told her all the things that he wanted to tell his beautiful guardian, that she would answer him. That somehow, she would become whole and always been in his life. Yet, despite all the things that they had been through. Despite all the times that he was sure that he had felt her hold him to her breast, as he had nearly died, she had never said a word. Her presence. Her smile being all that he had needed in his darkest hours.

"Okay.........I know I should be sleeping more and working less. I shouldn't be living on a diet of coffee and blueberries. But.................."

"Er, Tony..............?" A voice came. Tony turning to see Bruce poking his head around the door. The doctor looking a little confused, by the fact that Tony appeared to actually be talking to himself. Bruce expecting to come into his friend's room to see him with a woman. A woman whose voice he was sure he had heard.

"Is.........is everything ok?" He continued, as he made his way into the room and took a seat on the sofa next to the billionaire. His brows furrowing, as Tony seemed to smile at something that only he could see.

"Yeah, yeah. Everything is fine, Bruce. I was just thinking out loud." Tony replied. The smile never leaving his lips, as he caught glimpse of his angel in the glass that surrounded his lab.

"Oh, yeah. Right." The doctor replied. Wondering how many days Tony had been awake. Sure, that the espresso machine must have been working overtime.

"Can I ask you something, Bruce.............?"

"I.........I suppose so." The doctor replied, as he removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes.

"Do you think that that there are such things as guardian angels...........?" Tony enquired. Bruce thinking for a moment, having to admit that he was a little taken back by the unusual question.

"Well, given that we know Thor and Loki, the belief in tutelary beings such as guardian angels, no longer seems so farfetched. I mean, the idea of guardian angels has been around since antiquity and played a major role in ancient Judaism. But the notion of these angels does spread across many religions and appear in their own unique forms. I seem to remember something from Aquinas that said, on this road man is threatened by many dangers both from within and without, and therefore as guardians are appointed for men who have to pass by an unsafe road, so an angel is assigned to each man as long as he is a wayfarer. So, in other words, God is said to use an angel, to help protect and lead a person to do what's right." Bruce explained, as he put back on his glassed. Using his finger to push the bridge into the right spot.

"You do know that a simple yes or no would have sufficed, don't you?" Tony chuckled. Bruce finding himself smiling at his friend's teasing.

"So, if someone actually thought that they could see their guardian angel. That they had seen them for most of their life. That they could talk to them. You wouldn't think that they had lost their mind?" The billionaire continued.

"Like I said, we see Thor and Loki all the time. And given all the things that we have had to battle over the years, I wouldn't mind being able to see and speak to mine, if I have one. Why do you ask?" Bruce replied. Watching as Tony got to his feet and made his way to the door of the lab. His eyes seeming to watch something move up the stairs outside the room.

"Oh, no reason. Just curious. I'll see you in the morning, Bruce." Tony answered before disappearing through the door. Leaving a slightly confused Bruce to go back to his work.
