Bryce Loski's POV:

I'm not happy. More accurately, I'm not happy with Ruby. I don't think I ever was. Ruby was nice at first. She was different. She was genuine and kind and honest. She helped me forget about Juli. But I think after we got together was when she started revealing her true colors.

I know you're probably thinking I'm the asshole for cheating on Ruby with Juli. Don't get me wrong, I feel bad. Nobody deserves to be cheated on. But Ruby would constantly talk to other guys when we first started dating. I would tell her to stop but she would just tell me that she's helping them get over their crushes for her. I stayed with her because she made me happy. At least I thought she did.

The hitting started around two months ago. I saw her with another guy groping her while she gave him hickies at a football game in the parking lot. I grabbed her arm and pulled her to where no one could see us. The one time I decided to stand up for myself, it didn't go well.

2 Months Ago

"Ruby, you told me you were only trying to help them get over you! Not making them more obsessed with you!" I yelled.

She scoffed. "Are you kidding, Bryce? It's not my fault that you hardly ever touch me! Whenever I try to kiss you, it's like you're not interested in me! It's your fault I was hooking up with another guy!"

"My fault? My fault! You should've told me you felt that way! I would've changed!" She slapped me.

I froze. Why did I freeze? I could've done anything to stop her. But I just couldn't move.

"You are just like you're deadbeat father! You only ever think about yourself! I never told you because you're not gonna change! He was way better than you anyways! At least he knows how to handle a woman! No wonder you're parents aren't together anymore! Your father's an abusive alcoholic and your mother is just a scared little bitch who flinches at a fly. You and your family is pathetic."

It's true. My mom kicked my dad out because he would let his anger out on us. First it was Lynetta, but once she graduated, she immediately left to California. Then me and my mom became his targets. One night, I walked in on my mom caring for her bruises. I couldn't take it anymore. I started pushing my dad around.

"Who do you think you are touching my mom like that?! She's done nothing but care for you!"

"Oh shut up, Bryce! Your mom is like a doormat. She'll always let me walk all over her just like how you do the same." I punched him.

We started throwing fists at each other.

"Stop it, please! Just stop it." My mother sobbed. I stopped but my father kept going. He punched me across my face. I hit my head on the corner of the coffee table. I don't remember much after that. I only remember my mom screaming at my father.

"What did you do!? Get out, get out of my house now!"

I missed school for about a month. No one knows about my parents separation. Only Ruby. I feel like she was the only person I could tell that to. When I got back to school, people would ask what happened to me. I would just tell them that I didn't realize my mom was mopping so I slipped and hit the corner of my head. Anyways back to me and Ruby arguing. I know you're probably wondering why I haven't broken up with her if I'm so unhappy. Trust me I've tried.

"Ruby, this isn't working anymore." I told her after she reminded me of how pathetic I was.

"No. You're not gonna leave me." She slapped me again. "How dare you even consider that! You are nothing without me, Bryce Loski. Leave me and I will tell everyone why you actually missed school for a month. Why you're father is a deadbeat."

I'm not sure why I don't want anyone knowing what happened between my mom and father. It's just embarrassing. I don't wanna be known as the kid who was abused. I don't wanna be known for my trauma.

"Please don't, Ruby. Anything but that." I begged.

"Then don't argue with me and do what I tell you." She walked away.

I miss the person I thought she was. I need to come up with a plan to make her hate me. I don't care if it hurts her. I want her to feel the same pain she's made me feel.
