An Old Friend

Next-Day at School:

Juli Baker's POV:

Me and Mona were just hanging out at break today. She was munching on some Fritos BBQ Twists, and I was drinking the Slurpee she got me.

"So how come you never knew about Danny? Wasn't Bryce like the Boy Next Door?" Mona asked.

"Yeah but it was really just the two of us in our neighborhood. I mean there was his old best friend, Garrett, but I didn't really talk to him so he doesn't count. And I moved here 2 years ago. Danny moved to Mayfield when I wasn't living there. Also Bryce was more of the Boy Across the Street."

"Eh, same thing. But I thought you and Bryce were like best buds your whole lives. And then you caught feelings for him."

"Oh no. It was nothing like that. Tbh he didn't even like me in general. I don't know what the hell changed his mind but something changed it."

"Why didn't he like you?"

"He considered me a Stalker. I guess when I stopped liking him, he started liking me. But he threw away my eggs, made fun of my yard, and my disabled uncle."

"Yeesh, and you still like him?"

"Yup. I don't know it's just something about him. He makes me feel speci-

"COME HERE YOU MOTHER FUCKERS!" Mark screamed and stomping towards us.

"Should we run or?" I asked.

"Nah it's fine. I'm used to seeing his Wraths of Hell by now."

"Why the hell were you stalking me?"

"It wasn't my idea. It was Mona's."

"Oh you bitch. Thanks for throwing me under the bus."

"Forgive me, I'll get you Chic-Fil-A," I whispered. (I did my research. Chic-Fil-A was a thing in the '60s.)

"Op- Alright Mark. Scream, Yell, Punch, Slap, shoo, even kill me for all I care. "

"You embarrassed me! We were having a good conversation until Juli fuckin screamed, "WHAT!?" Like what the hell was that."

"Okay, she has an explanation for that. Explain Juli."

"So you know how Danny brought up his old friend?"

"Yeah. Why?"

"He said his name was Bryce. Bryce Loski."

"I don't see anything special about this excuse."

"Hey dumbass, Bryce Loski is her crush all the way from Mayfield."

"OMG, shut the front door! Really bitch!"

"Yup. Plus I was wondering during lunch if you can invite Danny to eat with us. I kind of wanna ask how Bryce is now. Since I haven't seen him in 2 years."

"Aww, you're too cute. Yeah, I'll ask him in the 3rd Period." Mark told me.

It's now lunchtime and Me, Mona, Danny, and Mark were just talking and eating our lunch. Me and Mona were eating the Chic-Fil-A I told her I would get. Mark was eating Pizza and Danny was eating Nachos.

"So Juli, how'd you meet Bryce?"

"He moved in across the street when we were around 6 or 7. I offered to help him and his dad carry boxes but his dad made an excuse for Bryce to go inside. When he tried running inside, I grabbed his hand and we held them. Now that I look back at it. He probably didn't like me. But now he's a lover boy waiting for us to meet again. How do you know Bryce, Danny?"

"We met at school. I was the new lonely kid at school. And Bryce came up to me with his friends. We all hit it off real quick."

"Oh so then you must know Dana, Marie, Miles, and Jayce right?"

"Oh yeah! For sure. Though, I remember Bryce and Jayce being more of rivals than friends. So like frenemies. I also remember Bryce talking to someone. I forgot her name though."

Huh. I guess Bryce is still the same. I wonder who he was talking to. It's probably nothing.

"Anyways, I don't think Bryce has changed. He was always the nice and caring kid."

"Did he ever mention me?"

"Hmm, now that I think about it. He did twice."

"Really?"

"Yeah. The first time he was talking about al his old friends and then said, " Oh yeah! There's also Juli! She was such an amazing and smart girl! She was really cool. I wish you met her. Man I miss her a whole lot."

I blushed.

"The other time he was telling a story."

"I remember when Juli used to chase me around in first grade. I was embarrassed but now that I look back at it, I should've chased her back. I also remember when she screamed, "BRYCE, YOU'RE HERE?!" And then ran up and hug me. I should've hugged her back."

"Wow. He still is lovey-dovey for me."

"Yup. He was in love with you. When he mentioned you, I wondered what happened between you too."

"It's kind of a long story. I rather not talk about it."

"Oh that's fine. I don't wanna force you."

"Thanks for telling me Danny. I really appreciate it." The bell rang for the 4th period. "Well, I'll see you guys later. Bye guys."

"Bye, Juli!" Everyone said.
