I sat up on the fence and watched the sun set when I heard a truck pull up onto my driveway. I actually couldn't believe how good I felt. I finally felt happy, at peace, and at home. It was nice to have someone that cares so much. When I looked over I realized that it was Nicholas. Getting up, I walked over to him and gave him a hug. "You know, that was so good. I still can't believe it. This is crazy." I noticed that he changed out of his jet black uniform and into his more classic red plaid shirt with a black cowboy hat. I noticed that he wore wranglers with brown boots. "So what was that whole speech about?" I asked as we walked over to the fence, sat, and watched the sunset.
"What do you mean? I said what I meant. Was it a little too embarrassing?" He asked with a smile.
I chuckled under my breath. "No, no, no. I was crying, Nick. That was the first time that I cried tears of joy and not sadness. The only downfall is that now my friends won't stop talking 'bout us."
"Ah. Same here. I've got people in the store now that ask how you're doin'. It's 'bout time that ya get noticed for something besides being a falsely accused suspect." His voice was quiet and kind. He did not mean that to be rude at all.
"You know, my friends always kinda tease me about things. They don't know the phrase 'what goes around comes around'. I guess I could also push the phrase 'two way street' onto them. They poke fun at me. Well, let's see... Eden kissed Liam. She's always been my best friend. She never makes fun of me. It's the rest. Garrett kissed Navy. Miranda, who is so annoying, kissed Jason." I rolled my eyes.
Nick wanted to know something. "Well just tell me somethin'. Don't take it offensive. Do you like the Schmidt guy?"
My eyes widened in shock."Heck no! He is my cousin. Remember my mother is a Schmidt."
"Oh okay. Berry is just tryin' to start up some rumors."
"She's just overreacting and being selfish." My head fell onto his shoulder as the sun went down. He put his arm around my back and laughed. "Why are you laughing?" I asked. My eyes took some time to adjust to the sunlight dimming.
He sighed. "That song that you liked? I have it stuck in my head."
"Ah Tierra Dulce. Love it."
He just quietly began to sing. "I ride alone, oh desperado. Head in' towards Montana, leaving Colorado. Better know Virginia's on my mind... as the sun slowly keeps the time. But I only hear the fire crack as I listen to 'em howl Ooh ooh. Fallin' asleep Lyin' on my back as I listen to em howl Ooh oh. Tierra Dulce... Tierra Dulce... just an old desperado on the run... Howlin' at the moon shootin' my gun..." he laughed a little. Nick never ceases to amaze me.
"That was good. How do you sing so well and ride horses so well? Even manage to stay on the bull. How do you have a father that would allow that to happen?"
"He did rodeo too. He had an accident that messed up his hips. That never stopped him from letting me do it. Sounds crazy I know, but I guess his philosophy was to let me do what I wanna do." Nick seems to be the same way as his father. It appears that he acts the same way.
"Right. He seems that way. Stubborn, but smart."
"Yes." Nick placed emphasis on yes.
"Wait he had an accident?" I asked.
"He did."
"Who did he happen to run against?"
His face gave me a concerned look. "We don't talk about that..." I could tell that this was a sore subject that didn't wanna be brought up. I needed to know so I kept pressing for answers.
