The music was soft and harsh, hopeful and yet a beat-down at the same time, I loved it.

We twirled across the dance floor, my irritatingly long dress swishing around me, I imagined myself looking like a storm cloud of cloth and had a internal chuckle.

"Artemis Fowl the Second"

I startled. The man, no, Artemis Fowl had told me his name, I didn't realize that I wasn't looking at him. My expression remained unyielding.

"Ashly"

He cocked his eyebrow, "And your last name?"

"Miller"

His brows scrunched, "I've never heard of this name, it doesn't sound hard to forget however. You look stunning."

I was taken aback by the compliment, he didn't seem the type to dish them out, but then I figured it out, he wants me for something, maybe he's like me, maybe he wants to know everything about everyone and maybe i'm someone he doesn't know much about, so he want's to learn more...Yes, I can see it now, in the set of his jaw and the slight tilt of his head, I am right.

"Thank you, though I can't say I haven't heard the name Fowl" I gave a little sly smile.

"It would be hard to have not heard of my family, we have acquired quite a reputation" He said. He was obviously very proud of his lineage. "But no more about me, since I haven't heard of the Millers, why don't you enlighten me?"

I smiled even bigger,

Be warm and friendly, don't let him think of you as his enemy. Being a bimbo right now will be beneficial.

"Well, i don't know much, Mommy handles most of everything. All I know is that we trade weapons to whoever will buy.  Bombs, guns, stuff like that" I made sure to sound slightly bored, to let him know that I wasn't very interested in this topic.

Lie, lie, lie...

"Ah, I see. And do you have any relatives that would take over the business? or will it be you?"

"It would be me."

Just...lie.

"You seem apt...since you're so good at acting, a good business woman always needs to be able to act" He was smirking.

Shit.

"Hmm? Oh, I'll have to step up my game then" I sounded nonchalant.

i switched my demeanor. I matched him, becoming a detached, calculative woman. I've always found this mask an easier fit. I started with a smile of my own, but it didn't reach my eyes.

"So Artemis, why are you at this hellhole?"

"Is it that bad? I find it to be sort of relaxing"

"I never said it was bad"

"Are you trying to scare me?" His expression said that-will-never-work.

Just wait, Fowl.

"No, am I having that affect?"

But he didn't answer, he just smiled.

Oh, my god, why does he have to look like that?

I know everything about this man's family and crimes, they are one of the most famous and public criminals in the underworld, and I wanted to know why he was here, was it just to keep up appearances? or maybe he's here for something else? and more importantly, why does he really want to know about me and my business here?

"So Artemis, enough about me. What are you doing here?" He seemed like the kind who would brush aside indirect questions, so i just asked bluntly.

He eyed me suspiciously, "I hope to find people who might be of use to me and my family in the future; im here to make connections" he looked real enough, but someone like me with an especially trained eye would be able to pick up the little twitches and tightenings that meant he was lying.

"Humm, well, the Miller family is always open if you need anything" I gave a cheeky wink.

"I appreciate it" He looked like he meant it. And, before I knew it, the song had ended. Ah, well.... as much as i was wary, he was fun to talk to. But now i have a mission to deal with....
