"Fine, i'll help you save Artemis fucking Fowl, but i'm doing this alone"
I am so not doing this as a team.
Butler and Holly exchange a third look before Holly speaks, "Um, we can't allow that, Morrigan. We need your help, but we are still going to be a part of this rescue"
Why can't they just let it go, i've agreed to help, shouldn't that be enough?
I give them my coldest look, "I'm not doing this with anybody else. I've worked alone for years, and i'd like to keep it that way"
"This isn't about what you'd like, Morrigan" Holly sneers, "It's about reality. There's no way you can do this on your own"
I know that she has a point, this isn't going to be a stealth mission, it would be best for me to have back up, but.... being part of a team?
A successful team needs to trust each other, something that i don't do, i don't trust Butler or Holly.
"You'd be surprised at what i've accomplished on my own. I can do it, i always have"
There's about a 42% chance i could to it.
Butler uses a voice like he's trying to soothe a restless animal, though i can hear an undercurrent of impatience, "I know you're probably used to working alone, but for once, please forfeit your usual manner of doing things. I get it, you don't trust us, and the feelings are mutual, but there is one thing we can both trust: We both want Artemis home safe, and we both want to stop Jon Spiro's bomb plan. That is what would make us trust each other enough for one mission, just one, and we can go back to being enemies"
I imagine Artemis again, the boy from my most recent dream. Smiling and loving, someone who kissed me, someone i trusted, loved. Only then do i realize just how dangerous Artemis is. Only then do i realize that he is someone i could grow to love.
An idea to just leave Artemis in Jon's clutches surfaces, I would never have to see him again. But as soon as i consider it, i know i can't do it, somehow, stupid sympathy stirs again, making me question how i've grown so soft.
Butler is talking sense, and i'm being childish, childish, i hate that word, i never want to be described as it again.
Be logical.
I desperately try to think of anything else, anything else, but nothing comes to mind. I'm pretty sure if i still don't agree to go with them, they will still go anyways to save Artemis, and they'll probably be in my way.
"Fine" I hear myself agreeing, "I'll go do this fucking team-work-My-Little-Pony-best-friends shit"
"We're not best friends" Holly reminds me, "just acquaintances until this mission is over"
I sigh, i really, really, hate this situation so much, "I know"
Then i look up at them with a steely gaze, slowly slipping into my assassin mindset, slowly storing all my emotions away, "We'll talk strategy in the car. I trust you have a car?" I direct my question at Butler.
He nods, "Yes"
"Good, you get the car ready, and Holly, either help Butler, or do something else that might be helpful to the mission, maybe get something that you fairies have that could benefit the mission? I don't know what assets you have on your hands. I'm going to go take that shower, and brainstorm some ideas, i won't take long" With that, i turned my back on them and step into the shower room, closing the door behind me with a firm snap.
Butler's POV
As soon as that steely look came into her eyes, i knew Morrigan's mindset had switched. She's no longer the wining girl trying to work alone, she is now an assassin, a logical thinker. Again she reminds me of Artemis, so much in fact, that when she first started issuing orders, my first instinct was to get right to it. But then i remembered who she was when she passed me to go to the shower room, and i caught a glimpse of a spot of blood soaking into the back of her jacket.
Strange, she's wearing a jacket, she usually doesn't like covering up.
I turn towards Holly, "Do you think you could get Foaly on the mission?"
She shakes her head, then slowly switches to a nod "I think i can. I might need to convince him though"
"Alright, well, we might not trust her, but i trust you to get Foaly online, i think he has a soft spot for you"
She looks affronted, "He does not!"
"Right. Well, i'm leaving to get the car, you focus on Foaly, possibly Mulch?"
"No, he's on the other side of the globe"
"Just Foaly then"
"What's it with you and Morrigan being so bossy?" She mutters, but exits the room anyways. I follow behind her.
Y/N's POV
I turn the water to it's hottest, letting it scorch the pain in my back. I had just come back from another killing, this time, a gang lord. I'm starting a war, a small one, between two small street gangs. I got a fake tattoo to match one of the gang's logos, and made sure to be seen killing the other gang's head leader. Let them take each other out, it'll be so much easier than killing them all one by one.
But the price of my easy-going-ness, is a stab wound in my back right shoulder blade. It's not deep, but it shouldn't be there at all, if only i'd been more careful.... I silently scold myself for not being alert enough to discover that little rat hiding, ready to run out and defend his leader.
The water turns a shade of red-pink on the shower floor, and a new grey-blue flows down to join it, my fake tattoo washing off from my arm. I had used a period pad and taped it on my stab wound, but the pad must have taken too much blood, it couldn't hold anymore, so now my crop top and the jacket i took from one of the gangsters is now stained with blood. I'll have to burn them to hide the evidence.
I'm leaning my hands on the same wall the shower pipes are positioned, my palms are spread wide as i keep my head under the running water, letting my hair soak wet, i eye the new colorful strands i have added to my hair, light blue. Suddenly, i can't hold it in anymore, tears burst from my eyes, mixing with the water, feeling strangely cool against my cheeks. I check to make sure Butler and Holly have left before i fully allow myself to weep.
