Once we were seated under a tree at a park, Mia seemed to relax a little. I wondered why she was so tense in the car but it was none of my business, so I ignored it. She was already looking at me when my green eyes met with her blue. They reminded me of the lookout, which I hadn’t visited since around three weeks ago. I didn’t know if I was strong enough to go back yet. “What?” I asked out of curiosity. She shook her head and shyly looked away. “No, what is it?”

“I don’t know,” she said, lying down. I lay next to her, our arms nearly touching. I felt the warmth radiating from her body, and I so badly wanted to touch her. I needed to know what her lips tasted and felt against mine. I so badly wanted to kiss her, but I wasn’t going to risk it. I had no idea where I stood with her. “Can I see your scars again?”

“Um,” I chewed on my lower lip. My old scars were replaced with week old cuts. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to let anyone know that I broke. “Th-they’re kind-of replaced with new ones…”

She sat up, “Show me.”

So I did. Still lying down, I revealed my left arm to her and she carefully ran her fingers along them. Her touch felt nice. Her fingertips were cool against my warm arm as I closed my eyes.

“Don’t do it again,” she said, letting go of my arm and poking my cheek. I nodded. “I used to cut my stomach.”

“It’s good that you stopped,” I peered up at her to see she was facing me. Her eyes were somewhere I would never know. I instinctively reached up and touched her cheek, tracing her jawline but she instantly turned away from my reach, lying back down. I sighed.

We started talking, and to my relief, we actually held full conversations. We talked about everything, and I mean literally everything, and I was beginning to feel as if I knew her my whole life. I told her things I never told anyone, and gradually moved onto the topic of the past two weeks. She listened carefully as I blurted everything out, even how Hayden was blaming me for Dad’s death, and that Rod still hadn’t a clue what was going on. It felt good to finally confide in someone. As they said, a problem shared is a problem halved. When I was finally finished, she said, “My Dad died in a car accident too, it was a few years ago.”

I sat up. “Is that why you were so tense in the car?”

Mia nodded slowly. “Yeah… I was in the passenger seat, and Dad had all the windows down with really loud music playing.” I looked away shyly as I realised why she had asked me to turn my music off, and acted so defensive when I wouldn’t do what she asked. I did the exact same thing her Father was doing before he was killed. I felt like a dick, but before I could apologise, she sat up and brought her knees to her chest and said, “I still remember what song was playing before… you know…”

I scratched the back of my head nervously. “What was the song?”

“Your Bones by Of Monsters and Men,” she choked.

“Good song,”

“Yeah,” she smiled against her knee. “He had really good music taste.”

It sounded like he did. Of Monsters and Men was one of my favourite bands. I smiled at her. “Do you trust me?”

She nodded.

“I trust you too.”

“Good,” she said, looking up at me. I stared back at her, admiring her perfect features. Her eyes were locked on mine as her cheeks began pinking and her smile quickly turned playful. I couldn’t help but adore her, and look at her every chance I got. I breathed deeply, cupping her chin between my thumb and index finger. Without thinking, I leaned forward so our noses were touching. My eyes flickered down to her full lips, noticing how soft and inviting they looked. I couldn’t help but smile at the thought of kissing her for the first time. I slowly pressed my lips against hers, watching as she closed her eyes and began to kiss back. My stomach instantly flipped, and I felt like jumping with joy, but more so, I never wanted to stop kissing her. A tingling sensation filled my whole body, crying out for more. I put both my hands on either side of her head as I deepened the kiss and she gripped onto the collar of my hoodie, tugging slightly as she took a deep breath. I was about to pull away but thought otherwise as her lips searched for mine.

Still kissing, I carefully got Mia to lie down. I lined my hips with hers and got on top of her, enjoying every moment. She wrapped her arms around my neck; pulling me closer, if that was even possible. Then she pulled away abruptly, pushing hard against my chest.

I quickly got off her, confused. “What?” I asked, desperate.

She looked away. “Just take me home.”
