Houston, Texas
Megan and Jaime's Apartment.
Megan
"Normani."
She looks at me. We've been preparing for this day for a few weeks now. It's here and we both don't know what to do.
"I'll see you again."
"I know. I'm just worried about everything that's going to come before I see you again. Especially because I won't have you—-"
"Normani, I'm always here. I'm always gonna be with you in spirit. Always." I come close and put a hand on her hip gently for reassurance. "Nothing will ever keep me from being by your side. Do you get dat?"
"yeah." She speaks quietly.
Justin, the bodyguard and Teyana's team member clears his throat as he's sat by the doorway, "Aye look... it's time to go."
I look back apprehensively and Normani is blank in the face. Completely expressionless. Almost as if Normani was avoiding her feelings and shutting down right before me.
I give her the strongest hug and this time I find myself beginning to cry and struggle to hold it together.
Im trying my best to record a mental picture of Normani to hold until I can see her again.
I get in the car and take a deep breath. Time to head back home to Jaime. I'm sure she'll have questions.
____________
I'm sat in the backseat of the car nervously while my driver and security are trying to plan out how to get me in.
They said they wanted to go in and speak to her first but these men have an intimidating ass look to them. And it would definitely cause issues because it'll spook the hell out of Jay.
"I'll just go in. Cold Turkey."
"Megan, are you sure?"
"Yes." I answer. "She's my little sister basically. Nothing bad's gone happen."
The two big buff men look towards eachother.
I don't even let them think about it before I grab my book bag. I'm stressed enough as is. I need to get to my bed again and hook my phone back up so I can speak to my baby. Normani is too far from me for my taste.
"Thanks for everything, y'all. How can I ever repay you?"
"No need, Miss Pete. Just stay safe, don't be discouraged."
I smile at the last comment. I'm finally done being in hiding.
___________
I knock on the door and rock on my heels to the balls of my feet. I hear a dog barking and getting closer along with some footsteps.
I look down because i noticed I dropped something. By the time I look up the door is being opened. I hear a loud gasp from my childhood best friend.
Her dog, I'm assuming comes over to sniff my bag that I set on the ground beside my feet.
"Meg?"
She begins hyperventilating and tears well up in her eyes.
We grew up like sisters and I missed her so much while I was gone. I've told Normani so many times. I want them to meet.
"Sissss!"
She comes close and slowly takes the hood of my jacket off and just stares at me all around.
"Nigga how... how? How?" She's speechless and blubbering, before I realize it I'm in tears too. "I left you there and you didn't have a pulse. I left you—- I left you there. Megan I'm sorry I abandoned you, I—"
"Jay." I put a hand on her shoulder. "Let's discuss this inside please. Sorry to intrude, lil bit."
"Oh- oh okay! Okay." She takes a deep breath and grabs my hand and I make sure to grab my backpack. "Megan, you live here. You ain't intruding. I haven't touched your room since, waiting for you to somehow return home."
I smile.
The little grey puppy keeps pawing at my legs.
"Oh shit... lemme introduce to you our new roommate, it got very lonely fast, so I got me a puppy. His name is 4oe."
I take a moment to analyze the dog. It's a French bulldog. Like the expensive ones that you see white people with. The ones they carry in purses.
"He tiny." I crouch down and let his little hyperactive self.
"Yeah I know. He's a few months old. Got him about a month ago."
I hum an "okay". The apartment looks the same as it always did otherwise.
I stand back up when I realize she's still crying and probably wants answers.
"C'mere." I know she's been wanting a hug but wants to be cautious.
Jaime cries into my chest.
"I thought you was gone, Megan. How are you still alive? How?"
"I don't know the answer to that, Jay." I answer through my tears. "I just woke up and found the strength to keep walking and I found a house. A special woman helped me out. You'll meet her soon."
"She helped you out?"
"Yeah. I owe her a lot." I say smiling thinking of my baby. "She did more than just help."
"I don't even know her but I know imma love her when I meet her. I'll definitely give her a thank you." Jaime says with a smile. "Damn, have you ate?"
"Yeah I ate."
"Okay good." She says sounding slightly winded. "Nigga oh my god."
She comes back and hugs me.
It feels good to be back in my regular life. Now I need to focus on Normani and this case.
