The car moved in silence, but Alu finally broke it.
"Hungry?" he asked.
"No," I replied.
"You wanna talk about it?"
"No... actually, yes. Stay away from Karen."
"Seriously? Is this why you're sulking? Because your friend has a thing for me?"
"Aluncedo, I am warning you!"
He chuckled, "You'll what, baby sis? Tell your mommy?"
"I'm serious. You could have any girl in my school, but you chose her. Why?"
"Because, believe it or not, lil sis, I think I'm in love with her."
I was astonished by what he'd just said. "You? In love?" I chuckled in disbelief. "Yeah right, and I'm adopted, right?"
"Argh, you know what, forget I said anything!"
He parked the car inside the yard, grabbed my stuff from his boot, and we went inside. No words, no nothing. I went straight to my room and slept; by now, the time was around 3 am.
I woke up to someone opening my curtains. I just covered myself with my blankets.
"Vuka, uzotya kaloku, hlehle wam," Aunt May said. Only Aunt May called me that.
"Okay, Mah," I said, getting up while she handed me my gown. When I checked the time, it was past 10, and I was still sleepy. But hey, a girl's gotta eat, right? I went to my bathroom to wash my face and teeth. When I got back, she was placing the last pillow on my bed.
"You know you didn't have to, right?"
"I know. Now let's go."
Mom and Alu were seated on the kitchen stools.
"Morning," I greeted.
"Morning," they replied.
"Mah, you're home early."
"Yeah," I said, grabbing a plate and going to my room.
Mom entered right after me. Great, now I have to tell her everything.
"You know why I'm here," she said.
"Mah, can we please not?"
"I'm not leaving until we can then."
"...," I just looked at this beautiful single woman in front of me. "Aya and I got into it," I finally told her everything.
"Come here," she said, pulling me in for a warm hug.
"Friends fight all the time. It's pretty normal if you ask me."
"But you and Sis Tee don't."
"We do, just not in front of you kids. Fighting is what strengthens your bond with your friends. Picture this, if you and Aya always agreed on everything and never truly spoke your mind when she did something wrong. Do you think you two would be where you are right now?"
She was right. Memories flooded back, and things suddenly made sense. Our arguments did make us grow into the sisters we are today. "No, I guess you're right."
"Look, you two are gonna be fine. Tomorrow I'll see you two all lovey-dovey."
"Geez, Mom, really now?" I rolled my eyes.
"Eat up now so you and your friends can go on your lunch date," she said, kissing my forehead and then leaving.
I showered, did all the necessary stuff, and took out an outfit. I wore a white vest with black skinny jeans and white chucks. Put on lip gloss and styled my weave. Grabbed my phone from the charger and walked out while switching my phone on only to bump into Alu in the passage and dropped my bag.
"Shit. Watch where you're going, man," I said, picking up my stuff.
"If you weren't so busy with that phone of yours, you would have seen me."
"Just get out of my way."
He stepped aside, and I went downstairs.
"Mummy, I'm done."
"Okay, let's go then."
We got into her car and went to Circus Triangle, jamming to some Beyoncé and singing along. I had dozens of missed calls, BBM texts, WhatsApp texts, and all, but I ignored them. I texted Alex asking where they were because I know she always has her phone in her hands, and she told me Wimpy, and that's where I headed to.
I greeted, and they hollered back.
"Hey, you, I thought you weren't coming," Kay said.
"And miss out on making more memories with my high school besties?" Aya just looked at me.
"Chomee, can we talk, please? Aside," she said.
"Weeeh, sisters," Siya rolled her eyes.
"Don't be jealous now," Alex said.
"Oh, shut up, you two. Yeah, sure," we stood up and went to the bathroom.
"Chomee, I'm sorry about last night. I shouldn't have said anything. It was not my place to put your business out there."
"Look, we'll talk about this when we get home, okay. I forgave you yesterday already."
"Thanks, lover," we hugged and went back to our table.
The day went on smoothly. We even went shopping and got ourselves bikinis because come festive season we're gonna be in Durban. The day ended, and we headed home. Aya and I were in my room, fitting on our clothes while taking lots of pictures.
"Sandiso is so not gonna stop wanting you after he sees you looking this hot," Aya said.
"What?! No, chomee!"
"You know he has a thing for you."
"Argh, please. I'm too busy for guys."
"That's what you always say, Nana, but you know very well you don't mean it!"
"Okay, listen. Maybe I do feel something for him, but he's an ass! He has a girlfriend, and he knows I know he does, but he's persistent on stuff that will never work."
"Argh, what girlfriend? They broke up, baby girl. Nigga told her he was in love with you."
"What?! When? How do I not know?"
"Relax, it happened at the convoy we missed. Hence she didn't come through."
"Oh my god. No! See! He's an asshole. Who does that to someone?"
"Sandiso Langa, Mr. hot, hot, hot Rugby captain."
"Argh, please, you're exaggerating."
"You can't tell me you haven't noticed."
"Nah, didn't notice. He's too much of an ass. A jerk even."
"You two are so gonna date."
"Shut up wena," I threw a pillow at her.
We continued chatting about useless stuff until we both fell asleep.
