"Do you want to die like this?"

Charles Vane spat blood onto the ground.

"You would deserve it, you know. Actually... no. You deserve worse. Much worse. You deserve to be beaten until your fingers are crushed into a fine powder, but you know what's stopping me?"

Vane didn't answer. His nose was furiously bleeding.

"Time!"

Vane looked down at the deck of the clean British warship he knelt on. He felt a hand around his throat. It tightened, pulling his head upwards. His eyes met the eyes of the man standing over him.

"I should tie your ankles together and throw you off. I would love to see your breath bubble up to the surface as you drown."

Benjamin Hornigold stood above him, a look of absolute rage in his eyes.

"Vane, I will let you live if you tell me what I need to know. I know it was here a few days ago."

Benjamin Hornigold had short, salt-and-pepper hair. His eyes were dark brown and his face was branded with a constant expression of annoyance and fatigue. He looked like he'd been through more than most men had. His nose was slightly crooked, like it'd been broken before.

"What does it matter?" Vane asked.

Hornigold punched him in the jaw, sending him flying onto his back. "Sorry. Who's asking the questions here?"

"He's dead," Vane said quietly. "Why does it matter?"

Hornigold stood closer to him and leaned down. "What do you not understand about this? You're telling me what I want."

"They were talking to Bonny and Sam," Vane said as Hornigold raised his fist again.

"Who was?"

"Captain... Thomas and..."

"And who?" Hornigold snapped.

"The other one," Vane said quickly. "I didn't get his name."

"Bullshit!" Hornigold hissed.

"I swear on my life that that's all I know. The captain was talking with Sam Bellamy and Anne Bonny. I saw them leave port together. That's all I know!" Vane cried.

"John, come here," Hornigold snapped.

Vane heard boots against the deck next to him. He felt a blow to his chest; he'd been kicked. Above him stood a man with a red leather coat. He had messy brown hair and stubble on his face. Vane let out a long, defeated sigh.

"You're working together?" Vane asked.

John Cockram kicked him in the stomach again. Vane groaned, shuddering.

"Listen, that's all I know, okay?" Vane said desperately.

John grabbed him by the collar and lifted him up. Vane stood in front of him, swaying slightly. Blood streamed from his nose. John pulled him closer, breathing heavily onto his face. John searched his face for a moment.

"I believe him," John said, throwing him back down.

Vane desperately sat up. He looked over at Hornigold. "Are you gonna let me go? I told you already that I don't know any more."

Hornigold glanced at John. He looked amused. "Let you go?"

"You said..." Vane said quietly.

Hornigold laughed. "No, you're coming with us now. Lock him in the brig!"
