The jungle was a complicated path with slopes and rocky areas and places so full of bushes you couldn't even see where you set down your foot.
Elise sort of regretted making this choice. Yes she was away from the giantesses, yes it would be harder to find her if they got here, and yes, she was away from any other who could spontaneously go giant like Caroline and Mrs. Bales, but what could she do here, exactly, wait until someone came to help? Just hope that everything solved itself?
She didn't know, and this felt like running blind into a fate that could turn out to be terrible.
"Hurry, Ellie!"
"Don't call me Ellie!"
"Sorry!"
Never in her life would Elise have guessed that one day Lola of all people would be the one guiding her. Back when their teacher transformed, Elise been just far enough away that when Bales reached out to trap a whole crowd, she didn't get caught. For some seconds, she'd been disoriented, not knowing what to do, and then came this little girl who looked like she belonged in a primary school, and she helped Elise up and told her she knew a place to hide in the forest.
Of course Lola knew. Of course the nerd of the class had investigated All Saints Island through and through before they arrived. In any other situation, Elise would've said it was a waste of time, but now she couldn't help thanking god Lola was there. How was the girl so good at orientation? The girl had nothing on her but her swimsuit and some sandals, no backpack, no map, no nothing.
"Careful here!" she told her, pointing down. How could she be so good at this? "There's a hole in this bush, almost got my foot caught."
"Thanks for the heads up," Elise sighed. God, she was so tired. Having to run all the way down the pool, then to the beach, and now trekking through this jungle and with all the heat was definitely something she was not prepared for. How had Lola not exhausted herself to death already? It should be hell for her short legs to keep going through all of this. Now was specially dangerous, because they were descending a steep slope, and it felt like every step could result in them falling very violently into a pass of hard roots, thorny bushes and lots and lots of pain.
Elise passed over the hole Lola had mentioned, careful not to stick her foot in, but in the moment of truth, she found no good place to step down. Quickly, she lost balance, and with the soft terrain under her, she couldn't keep herself standing.
"Oh, shit!" Elise fell forwards.
"What happ-" Lola was shut by Elise's body falling on top of her. The girl obviously couldn't break her fall, and together they rolled down the slope. "Aaaaa!" It was chaos, the world spun, and every half a second they were whipped by stray branches or bounced on a rock.
"Fuuuaaaaaaa" Elise tried to swear but the confusion and dizziness of it all prevented her. Something got in her mouth. Shit. Fuck. Just what she needed. So fucking gross.
Finally, they hit solid ground. Solid, grassy, and moist ground. Elise had landed on top of Lola, and she rolled out of the poor girl, then spat whatever had gotten inside her mouth.
"Shit," she gasped. "Sorry."
"No problem," Lola groaned, struggling to get up. Elise felt a dozen different pains distributed all along her body, she couldn't imagine what it would be like for the smaller girl. "It wasn't your intention."
"Goddamnit, Lola," Elise said. Was there nothing
"What?"
"I fucking screwed up, almost got ourselves killed, and you're there all like 'it wasn't your intention, I forgive you'," she made a bad impression of the girl, who seemed more surprised than offended. "You act like a doormat sometimes, Lola, grow a damn backbone."
