The main hall of the resort proper which had seemed so loud and busy yesterday was now completely empty. The white marble on the floor was clear as day, and so was all the garbage that had been littered over it. Candy wrapping, empty bottles, everything that someone would discard while running away from a giant.
Just remembering what had happened in the morning left a feeling of constant uneasiness in the back of Uriel's mind. The people running, all squished together, hand-picking them up just for Caroline to swallow them whole. It was unnerving. Had it been up to him, they wouldn't be here, they would've gone straight with Thomas to the boats and gotten out of here as soon as possible. But of course, he wasn't the only one in the group, and he couldn't just say something and have the rest follow, and so, while Thomas went back and started working on their escape route, Cassie and the woman she'd saved, Fernanda was her name, had decided to go to their rooms and look for clothing.
It made sense, nobody would want to spend who knows how long naked in front of a group. Uriel did his best to look away, but since Cassie was the one to lead the march, and Fernanda always stuck so close to her, his eyes inevitably strayed to their more attractive parts. Their swaying hips, prominent thighs. It was distracting. He was practically thanking god once they reached the intersection that divided the men's and women's wings.
"See you later, babe," Tina said.
"See you later." They kissed, and Uriel ignored Elise's gag. After that, they went their separate ways, the sound of the girl's conversations growing more distant every second, until Uriel was left alone with a dreadful, empty silence.
Though they had seen no signs of any giant person beside Patty, he couldn't help but feel nervous, as though there was someone observing him at every corner. He looked through the windows of the hallways. He could see the vast jungle of All Saints Island, the white, empty beach, littered with fallen umbrellas and abandoned blankets. Could he find, if he looked hard enough, one of those beasts? Catch them in the act of eating someone? Probably not. They all had gone to the jungle, it seemed, chasing those who'd had the same idea as Uriel and the rest. They could've found the cabin at any moment, while they were there. That thought bothered him greatly. Now he was safe though, he was safe. This was the third floor, Caroline wouldn't be able to reach in from the windows, nor would she fit in these narrow hallways. Mrs. Bales, on the other hand... Uriel shivered. The way she'd blown them a kiss, right before they'd disappeared into the jungle, he hadn't forgotten it. Did it mean that she knew they'd been hiding under her face the whole time, and she'd just allowed them to escape?
He shook his head, better to focus on something else. He went looking for his room, the 212. All doors had the keys in, they'd been instructed to do that so the cleaning staff could come inside and clean while they were away at the pool. It sounded so weird back then, but now it was a lifesaver, it meant that they didn't have to go to reception and risk being attacked. Uriel walked past room 211 and found his door, he reached out for the knob and pushed, but it was locked. There was someone in there.
He knocked. "Hey!" he said. "Anyone in there?" There was a sound on the other side, feet trampling, and shortly after was the click of the door unlocking. The knob was turned, and the entrance opened to reveal who was on the other side.
"Dick?"
"Uriel, dude!" Dick said, cheerful. "I thought you were fuckin' dead, man!"
Uriel punched him in the face. The hit send Dick flying into the rook, and he fell on his ass as he stepped in.
"Ow, shit, what the hell, man?" Dick asked, holding a hand to his bruised cheek. "What was that for?"
"You fucking asshole," Uriel ran up to Dick, who tried to stand up, but his lanky limbs were too awkward to do too much of anything that quick. Uriel grabbed him by the neck of his shirt, held him up so his feet didn't touch the ground, and spoke clearly to his face. "Do you have any idea of what you've done? Any idea?"
