Y/N pov:

I wake up on the cold pallet in the tent, groaning from the effort used to sit up. I open my eyes and find Whisper getting ready for something, the wisps floating around her. "Where ya goin?" She jolts a bit, as if not expecting me to wake up. "Umm, a contractor told me that he had another job..." I looked at her, a bit disappointed. "You told me you weren't going on any missions today..." She shows me a message from her usual contractor. "told me he's willing to pay triple!" She says excitedly "isn't that a bit suspicious? Why would he do that?" I ask. "said to clear the base of stray robots, and a couple of minions of his would be stopping by to try and rebuild what they can, l'be a bit more difficult." I look at her quickly standing up. "Then I'm coming with to back you up!" I say, determined to help.

"No." I look at her, confused. "Why not?" She takes off her mask. "Don't want you getting hurt." I put on an exaggerated look of offense. "Hurt? Me? Never! I've been getting better! I can fight alongside you now!" She smiles, but still looks a bit nervous. "But Y/N,-" "but nothing! Admit it, I did good when Eggman attacked the house, I bought us a lot of time! And I've been practicing since then! I can actually hit the target!" I say, half joking, half serious. It works, and she giggles quietly.

"grab your gear, let's go." All the wisps except the green one pop into Whispers weapon. I grab my resistance gear, and put it all on, then grab my hover wispon, it had become my favorite since the attack. Me and the green wisp have also gotten pretty close. It looks at me cheerfully, I pet it's head and it pops into my wispon, and I follow Whisper.

Whisper pov:

We arrive at the abandoned base, it seems pretty quiet, reinforcing its Abandoned status. We slowly and cautiously sneak to the entrance. I use an old Eggman password he used for everything on the terminal by the door. It opens with a loud creak and scraping of metal, the doors in these old bases are always huge. The doctor had some very big robots, so maybe that's why. As soon as we enter the doorway, I start moving ahead quickly, checking the corners. and going through doorways, Y/N not far behind.

As we make our way through the base, I notice that their is an absolute lack of robots. Even at the other bases, there were a few stray robots here and there. But now? Dead silence, only the soft pitter-patter of our footsteps filled the empty halls. No robots, triple the pay, and 2 minions he refused to elaborate on? There is certainly something going on, he was planning something, I can feel it... I turn to Y/N. "Keep close to me."

I have to protect him, no matter what.

He comes closer and looks a bit nervous. "This silence is deafening, was it like this at the other bases?" "No, theres something going on." I flash through all the possibilities in my head, has Eggman returned? His disappearance a distraction so he can prepare? No, he's too much of a showman for that... maybe the robots he has as his right hand men? No, I've heard they're too lazy and fed up with Eggman to continue his schemes without him there. So who does that leave? Metal sonic? For the battles I took part in, he never showed, only his phantom, was Eggman repairing him? Or worse, upgrading him... can't think about that now, continue with the mission. I'm almosy eager to find out why it's so empty here.

My heart sinks as the walls around us are painted red by brief flashes, followed by a loud, blasting alarm sound.
