Chapter 18: Caught off Guard

Y/N pov:

"We're coming up on Spiral Hill Village now!"

I look out of the window beside my seat, and see Tangle's hometown, surrounded by zombots, I shudder at the sight. "Bye bye any sleep I'll be getting tonight..." I look to Amy as she starts talking, "Ok, Tails and Cream, you two are going to find survivors and airlift them out." They both looked determined. "Espio, Tangle, Whisper and Y/N, your all gonna keep the zombots in check, make sure they don't get near the survivors!" We all nod and get ready. "Me and Gemerl will stay at the shuttle to protect it, everyone understands what their doing?" Everyone nods, and gets ready at the shuttle door.

"Touchdown in T-minus ten!"

I look at Whisper, Tangle and Espio, I need to make sure they're all ok.

"Six!"

I look to Tails and Cream, they're just kids, they shouldn't even have to worry about these things...

"One!"

The shuttle door opens, and we all rush out, Tails and Cream fly away to look for people, Espio vanishes, leaving me, Tangle and Whisper. "I need to get to the museum to see if Jewel's okay!" I nod to her, and look at Whisper, "you need to get to higher ground, so you can help everyone!" She hesitates for a second, but nods, then grapples to the roof of a partially broken building, providing covering fire for someone in the distance, while me and Tangle head to the museum.

Once we get there, I'm hesitant to go in. "I got a bad feeling about this, I had a dream about this place..." Tangle looks at me with a desperate expression, "Please! I need your help on this, there could be a lot of zombots inside, I'll need help!" I cave, and go inside with her. There's no one inside the main room, it's quiet, eerily quiet. "Jewel!" Tangle calls out.

But no one's there.

We hear something fall over in what looks to be an office. I slowly creep towards the door, "stay here." I tell Tangle as I slowly peek inside the door, I see a zombot beetle in the room. Is that Jewel? The zombot sees me and flies towards the door, busting it open and grabbing my arm, infecting me.

"NONONONO, GETOFFMEGETOFFME!"

Tangle throws a chair from across the room, hitting the zombot away from me. I look at my arm, and see a metallic goo slowly spreading across it. I look at it in shock.

What am I gonna do?

In my shock I don't see the zombot charge at me again, it hits me, and I barrel into Tangle. "Oof!" We hit a pillar and look up, the zombot I coming at us again, "oh no you don't!" I grab her by the wings and slowly bring her to a nearby glass showcase, and lock her in. I look at Tangle, who's now looking at me in horror. "I-I don't, I don't know... TANGLE WHAT AM I GONNA DO!?" "I-I don't know!" I remember that I hit her when I was pushed by the zombot. "Tangle, check yourself for infection!" She looks all around her body, and finds some metallic goo on her shoulder. I look at her with an expression of pure defeat.

"What are we going to do!? Oh my god, oh my god..." I feel myself having a panic attack. Tangle picks me back up on my feet, and shakes me. "We can't panic! First, we have to think about this, then we-" We hear Whisper on the radio.
"Y/N, Tangle, you guys ok?" I hesitantly pick up the radio. "Yea, we're fine, just had to deal with a zombot." "You're ok, right?" I have to lie to her, for her sake. "Yea, we're ok, just need to wrap it up here." "Ok, I'm coming to you." I start panicking again. "No! You can't!" "Why not?" Tangle takes the radio from me, and talks into it. "The streets are filled with zombots, you'd never make it, head back to the shuttle, we'll find our way to you guys." Whisper hesitates before speaking again. "Alright, but be careful!" "You know it!"

We look at each other for a while, when suddenly Sonic the Hedgehog bursts through the door, and looks at us, he sees we're infected. "G-guys, i-i'm sorry..." I look at him, and begin to calm down, accepting my fate. "Don't be sorry, it's not your fault." He looks like he's about to say something, but he chokes it down. He then looks outside, and looks back at us. "We have a problem, we need to take off, but as soon as the zombots hear it, it'll be like moths to a flame!" Me and Tangle look at each other, as though we had the same idea, and we explain to sonic a plan to wrap her tail around the lampposts in the street, and for me to use it as a defensive line for them to escape.

Sonic reluctantly agrees, and carries Tangle along the street, wrapping her tail along the lampposts. I follow, using the wispon to create cubes above the zombots, and jump across them. I get behind the first line Tangle's tail makes. I start holding back the zombots using the wispons power. When the cube wall breaks, I start hitting the zombots with the hammer, some of them grab me, speeding along the infection. The zombots keep getting closer. I look back and see Sonic run off, leaving us to our decision. The zombots get close enough to grab Tangle's tail, she unwraps herself from the first set of lampposts, and I fall back to the second line.

Two defensive lines left.

I hold the zombots back here as well, I can hear Tangle now. "So, this is the end huh?" "Only for a little while!" I hit one of the zombots with the hammer, sending it flying backwards. I flinch as I hear Whisper yell for us.

"Y/N! TANGLE! NO!!"

I lose focus, and the zombots grab at her tail again, so she retracts it to the last set of lampposts.

One defensive line left.

I hit the hammer on the ground, and it places a wall of blocks on the ground in front of me. The infection has spread to my shoulders, and is going down my back. It's so cold, and it burns... I fall back to the last defensive line, and I see the shuttle take off. "Don't keep us waiting too long..." Tangle says. I look at her, the infection is slowly climbing up her back. The wall of blocks dissappears, and the zombots quickly move towards us.

"Tangle, this isn't a good situation, I'm not gonna lie..." "It'll be fine!" The zombots are in range now. I start hitting multiple zombots, trapping them in cubes and slowing them down, but they're still coming. Eventually they grab her tail again, she retracts it fully, and starts punching the zombots that come close.

No defensive lines left.

I back up, and the wisp in my wispon comes out, giving me a worried look. I smile to it. "Thank you, for all you've done for me, go to Angel Island, it should be safe there..." It nods, and floats away. I join Tangle in fighting the zombots, I'm furious, all the thoughts of how unfair this is swirl around in my mind.

I shouldn't be here! I should be with Whisper and all my other friends! I should have confessed to her while i had the chance, but now I can't, and it's all your fault!!!

I punch the zombots, more angry than I've ever been, tears streaming down my eyes. I turn to look at Tangle, only to see she's been completely turned. She hits me with her tail, sending me into a wall.

I feel the infection getting faster, the only parts of me that aren't metallic is me left eye and forehead. I speak softly, and hear that my voice sounds almost robotic. "I'm sorry I wasn't good enough..." it fully takes over,

It hurts...
