The next morning went by fast, everyone was rushing to get to their first class, determined not to be late. Getting a detention on the first day of classes was one of the worst things, especially if it was with Snape.
So, when I had potions first thing, I made sure to be at least five minutes early.
"I've never been this early before." Hannah mumbled to me as we walked up the stairs to the classroom, rubbing our eyes as we did.
But when we reached the top, we soon realized that everyone else had planned to get there ten minutes early, so we were one of the last ones in.
And although we technically weren't late, Snape made sure to shoot the two of us a glare.
I scanned the classroom for spare seats and although there wasn't any where we could be next to each other, I could see one next to Susan and one next to Ernie.
I decided to let Ernie get his wish and sit with Hannah, so I instead walked over to Susan's table, smiling at her as I was about to sit down.
But before I could, Susan spoke up, "Uh- sorry Aurelia, but I saved that seat for Zacharias." She apologized sheepishly, feeling guilty.
I widened my eyes, feeling awkward as I glanced around the room once again for another spare seat, my heart stopping when I figured out that the only one was next to Malfoy.
"Thanks." I muttered, a pang of annoyance hitting me.
I would understand if Zacharias had claimed that seat before, but I knew that Susan was just saving it because of her little crush on him.
I slowly walked over to Malfoy's table, holding my breath the entire time.
Once I reached it, the blonde raised his head to look at me, giving me a nasty look before turning to his two followers to complain.
I cursed Susan under my breath and dropped my bag on the ground, sitting down next to Malfoy who sneered at me.
In complete silence, I reached into my bag to take out my books, slamming them on the table which made it slightly shake, causing another reaction out of Malfoy who was commenting on every move I made.
"Seems like Hufflepuffs can get aggressive. Who would have thought? I was under the impression that they were too weak to-"
"Can you be quiet?" I snapped, glaring at him as I did. "I'm not too happy about sitting next to you either, but I don't have a choice. So, if you don't mind, I would appreciate it if I didn't have to listen to your voice for the whole class."
I felt pleased with myself for standing up to him and seemingly shutting him up, because I didn't hear another peep from him except from his whispers to his fellow Slytherins.
"Eyes open. Today we will be learning to brew Wideye Potion." Snape finally began the lesson, "Wideye Potion has many practical uses, so long as you do not abuse it. Come and see how it is made."
He wrote the page number down, giving everyone no excuse for having to ask for it again while he continued to explain the potion.
I quickly flicked through the book to the correct page while paying attention to Snape, even if you were making notes, he hated people not listening to him. J had learnt that in my first year after the fatal mistake of trying to write down what he was explaining.
"Would anyone like to explain the effects of Wideye potion?"
Immediately as always, Hermione's hand shot up with the answer after not even a second, it was impressive.
Snape was hesitant to pick on her, wanting to give the question to someone else, like a Slytherin, but when no one else put their hand up, he had no choice.
