Till death do us part

I loved him like no other. For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until parted by death; these vows repeated in your mind as you watched him wither away in the white hospital bed. His once intelligent oak-brown eyes were now hollow and glazed over. The IV tube dripped into his cold veins, the heart monitor hooked under his chest with incisions, and a G-tube hooked into his stomach from a small incision. His once mischievous and smug face was now sunken and pale. I sat in the chair next to him, tears streaming down my face, soaking in the sound of the machines as I watched him stare off until his horsed voice spoke out.

"Why do you cry, Belladonna?" His dry, cracked voice rasped out to me.

"I cry for you, Osama. I cry for the fact that I must watch you suffer and be unable to do anything." I sobbed.

"I am deeply sorry that I'm unable to complete the role of being a husband.." He Rasped out, turning his head to face me.

"Don't be sorry. You've done enough, Osama."

"I'll never stop cursing myself for being so foolish that day," He spoke bitterly.

"You didn't know-"

"I should have known!-" he cut me off angrily till he broke out in dry coughs.

I stood up urgently, grabbing a paper cup and filling it with cold refreshing water. I walked back to the hospital bed as Dazai finished coughing.

"Drink some water. It might help."

I offered to cup to him and watched as he reached up to grab the cup from me with a shaky hand. Dazai was stubborn as a mule. He wouldn't let me help him with stuff wanting to prove that he could recover from this poisoning, wanting to be as normal as he could be. I grabbed the cup as he finished it and dumped it in the trashcan, but as I walked back to my chair, he said something that broke my heart.

"Please stay with me. I know I won't make it, and this is a selfish request, but please stay." He whispered, tears dripping down his face as he looked at me.

"Till death do us part."

"Till death do us part." He whispered back, smiling, and nodded at my declaration.

No matter what shape he was in, I loved him regardless. I fell in love with him. Not his physical body but rather his mind. His ideas, his jokes, his stories. My heart ached to the point where it was as if the very breath I drew felt like a knife stabbing me.

"Sleep. I'll be here in the same position when you wake up."

"Tell me something before I go to bed, love."

"I fell in love like you would fall asleep: slowly and then all at once."

"A quote from The Fault In Our Stars, huh? Maybe we're Hazel and Augustus."

"Hopefully, we're all the sweet love and not the part where I lose the love of my life."

Dazai chuckled, slowly dozing off as his head nodded off. I reached over brushing the messy strands of hair out of his face.
