Peter slept in a spider-silk hammock. He was having a dream about a plane crash that fell to the tune of American Pie. It sounded like a commercial for life insurance. And then for some reason, Dr. Banner was there, and he was also on the plane falling to his death. It might have something to do with him being arrested, but after a couple months, Peter wasn't that affected anymore.
He was almost certain that he had class when he woke up, and panicked about his math homework that he hadn't gotten around to doing yet.
In the darkness of pre-dawn, an alarm blared in his room.
Peter tapped it lightly as he hopped out of his hammock. A good night's nightmare was nothing new. It was refreshing to have some background music this time instead of the screams of his parents, though, so that was a nice touch.
Pietro muttered something ungrateful-sounding in Sokovian and threw a pillow at Peter.
The boy, who had been picking up on some Sokovian since they first met, frowned and threw it back. "I'm not a bitch," he protested. Peter chucked a pen at the older boy. "And at least Miss Romanoff likes me."
Pietro flipped him off groggily and Peter went in search for breakfast.
It was really cool to be living with the Avengers over spring break, even though he hasn't told May that he was training to be a superhero instead of running around at their beck and call.
Miss Romanoff made it all happen in a blink of an eye. One second, he was considering getting a job at Mr. Cadenza's ice cream parlour, and the next, he was working with the Avengers. And he was getting paid!
He found Vision making a cup of coffee, which he assumed was for Wanda. Since, you know, Vision can't eat. Or drink. "Morning, Vision," he said as he pulled the milk out of the fridge.
"Good morning, Peter." Vision stirred the mug he was holding. "Did you sleep well?"
"Compared to a regular person, no." Peter cracked a smile. "But compared to nights I've had in the past, it was great."
"That sounds concerning. Would you like a therapy session after I give Wanda her coffee?" Vision offered nicely. "I can download 'A Guide to Understanding the Mental Health of Teens' by Carson Wells while I run it to her."
Peter waved him off. "It's fine. Plus, if you're going to see Wanda, you should probably not be distracted. You should ask her on that date you're trying to. You know, since you guys might not have forever and should do something about the unspoken bond you have between the two of you."
Okay, maybe he was still kinda affected by Dr. Banner and Miss Romanoff's thing where apparently they confessed their love to each other and then the scientist got arrested.
But Peter was absolutely fine and was no was implicated in hacking into Quinn's audio files to listen to what happened when the scientist and the spy said goodbye. That was entirely Mr. Stark's fault and it just so happened that he roped Peter into it.
Vision looked confused. "I am not quite sure what you are referring to, Peter," he said, reverting to a more formal speech pattern. "There is no bond between myself and Miss Maximoff. Other than a platonic, non-romantic bond that we both appreciated. I do not speak for Miss Maximoff, however, and I must bring this mug of melted dried bean juice to her before it becomes redundant and cold." He left through a wall and the mug stayed in the room, almost falling to the floor.
Peter jumped and caught it before it spilled and he heard a faint, empathetic "Oh, well, now." from the other room.
Vision came back in via the wall and took the mug of coffee from Peter. "Thank you, Peter," he said stiffly. And he went to Wanda's room without walking through any more walls. That Peter could hear, at least.
He sat down at the kitchen island and fed himself cereal, taking out his phone to text Ned, his best friend.
Peter: Good day, padawan.
Ned saw his message quickly and replied: Who made you the master
Peter grinned and typed out: First come first serve. How's Mr Cad?
Ned: Fine. How's the ALL EXPENSES PAID, WORKING WITH THE AVENGERS, STARK LEVEL INTERNSHIP???
Peter sighed and thumbed: I just watched someone walk through a wall trying to talk to their crush
Ned: Thor???
Peter: Vision
Peter: I gtg, talk later
He turned off his phone as Mr. Stark came in. Peter jumped from his seat. "Good morning, Mr. Stark. I didn't know– would you like me to make you a coffee?" he asked energetically.
Perhaps too energetically, because Mr. Stark eyed him tiredly. "I can do it myself, kid."
Peter sat down. "Right you can, sir!" He went back to his cereal and mourned the loss of it's crunchiness.
Mr. Stark hesitated before leaving his coffee to brew. "Have you ever had a bad dream?" he asked the boy.
Peter nodded. "Some. Sometimes I get new ones but usually it's just the regular old, 'can't save my uncle from getting killed by robbers' dream. I'm used to it," he shrugged.
"Huh." Mr. Stark stepped closer, looking slightly curious. "How are you used to it?"
Peter thought about it. "Well, for one, I've been having it for a couple years now. And also, it's like watching a sad movie over and over. You know, you know how everything is going to go and you can't particularly stop it, but you're watching it anyway because it's the only movie playing on every channel."
Mr. Stark frowned. "So, what, just suck it up?" he asked incredulously.
Peter shrugged again. "Worked for me. It also helped that I have Ned and my aunt who both love and support me."
The billionaire rolled his eyes. "Of course, the two things I don't have," he muttered.
Peter frowned. "You have Miss Potts and Happy. And Miss Romanoff, Captain Rogers, Mr. Barton, Thor, the Avengers. Your team."
"My team?" Mr. Stark scoffed. "That hot mess is one of the reasons why I'm on anti-depressants."
Peter thought it over. "Well, okay, Mr. Stark. If you want company, I'm here until..." he checked his phone. "Seven thirty pm. Then I have to go back to May and go to school." He fully expected Mr. Stark to laugh at his offer.
Instead, the man looked over Peter like he was seeing him in a new outfit or something. "You know what, kid?" he said. "I might just take you up on that."
