Natasha sat down at the conference table.
Yelena turned to look around and sighed, leaning onto the table on her forearms.
Nat studied the young woman in front of her. Well, technically, not young. But younger. Yelena had to be what, 27, by now?
There was a crash just outside and then just silence. Natasha held quiet while the door handle turned and opened to a woman with a gun trained on Yelena.
She had tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Ingrid," Yelena breathed. She looked, for lack of a better word, heartbroken. "Oh, no. Ingrid. Sestra. No."
"I don't wanna do this," Ingrid said. "He's making me. Yelena, please." She shoved her gun into her holster, touching Yelena's shoulders. "Please."
A whirring noise came from somewhere and the Widow collapsed.
Natasha approached when Yelena stepped back and checked the body. Ingrid had blood in her eyes. Probably some self-detonating mechanism for when the Widows defected. Nat stifled a shudder to think what would happen if her generation of spies could have had that. She'd probably be long dead.
"Do you believe me now?" Yelena asked sullenly.
Natasha sighed. "How many others?"
"Enough."
Nat looked at Yelena, who suddenly seemed to be on alert. "What?"
"Widows come in pairs," Yelena replied quietly. "If not another then it's Dreykov's special project. He can mimic anyone he's ever seen. It's like fighting a mirror. Dreykov only deploys him for top-priority missions."
Natasha sat down. "This doesn't make any sense."
"Well, the truth rarely makes sense when you omit key details."
Nat's head snapped up. "What is that supposed to mean?" she said defensively.
"You haven't said one word about Dreykov's daughter. You killed her."
Yelena met Natasha's eyes and the older woman looked down at her hands. "I had to. I needed her to lead me to Dreykov." Nat paused, trying not to let herself be caught with a loophole. "Dreykov's daughter was collateral damage. I needed her to be sure."
Yelena sighed. "And here you are, not so sure."
"I needed out." Natasha exhaled, glancing at the body on the floor. "The Red Room's still active. Where is it?"
"I have no idea. He moves location constantly. And every Widow is sedated on entry and exit for maximum security." Yelena shook her head. "He-" she broke off into a sigh.
"I'm just finding it hard to believe that he could stay off my radar," Nat said.
Yelena scoffed. "Well, it's not smart to attack an Avenger if you want to stay hidden. I mean, the clue is in the name. Dreykov kills you, one of the big ones comes to avenge you."
"Wait, what are the big ones?"
Yelena regarded her with an unimpressed look. "Well, I doubt the god from space has to take an ibuprofen after a fight." She paused. "Where did you think I was all this time?"
Natasha shrugged lightly, avoiding her eyes. "I thought that you got out and were living a normal life."
"And you just never made contact again?" Yelena asked stonily.
Nat shook her head. "Honestly, I thought you didn't wanna see me."
"Bullshit." Yelena rolled her eyes. "You just didn't want your baby sister to tag along, whilst you saved the world with the cool kids."
