The sun was setting as Link was thrown back into the sky above the clouds. His Loftwing came when it was called, just like always, and Link set off for Faron Woods. The new Gate of Time would take him to where Impa had taken Zelda, and with his sword tempered by the Sacred Flames of three Dragons, he could finally carry out his mission and stand at her side.
As he rubbed the tiredness from his eyes, Fi appeared to glide beside him.
"We are close to Skyloft," Fi told him. "And it is getting dark."
"That's not going to matter in a minute," Link chuckled. "If I've got this right, that gate'll take me back in time. It'll be day again soon."
"You misunderstand," Fi floated in front of him, forcing him to stop. "Zelda's current state is in flux until we arrive in her time. You are the only one who can activate the Gate of Time. Now is the only chance you will have to rest. I suggest you return home."
Link shook his head. "I've been fighting too long, and been too slow al--"
"Go home," Fi ordered. "You are tired. You have not eaten since you began this journey this morning."
His Loftwing squawked at him as it hovered in place, and Link realized it was just as tired as he was. He'd been working it hard all day, zipping across the sky. "Okay... let's go home."
Fi returned to the sword as Link altered course.
___
The citizens of Skyloft had already started shipping out. It was hard to believe all this happened in just a day, but as Link drifted down from the sky he watched as the vendors of the Bazaar started making their way home. He'd missed the day of celebrating yesterday after being knocked unconscious, but now it wasn't even like the Wing Ceremony didn't happen, but more like everyone was trying to forget it.
Not that it surprised him... the disappearance of both Zelda and the graduating Knight was sure to scare people, especially if they weren't given any answers. Still, Link had trained for years of his life for that day, yesterday... and he wasn't even here to enjoy it...
How did it all go so wrong?
Link quietly dropped onto the roof of the academy, sneaking in through the upper floor. Of course, the second he shut the door he was noticed by the sole occupant still in the building.
Fledge.
"Link!?" Fledge exclaimed, face pale like he'd seen a ghost. "Wha--?"
"Hold on," Link warned. "Don't panic."
But panicking was the one thing Fledge was known for, and bolted from the room. He ran down the stairs screaming about Link's spirit haunting the upper floor.
Shrugging it off, Link walked down the hall to his room. It felt like ages since he last saw it, but there wasn't even a layer of dust, after all he'd only left it this morning. It felt smaller now though, after seeing all those grand caverns and temple chambers. This little floating island, with all it's people, felt smaller and smaller the more he saw of the world below.
