In the skirmish that went on in Ashok Vatika, Ravan's son Aksh got killed by Hanuman. The king of Rakshasas was shocked and he finally sent the most celebrated commander of his, Indrajeet Meghnaad.
He went to the Ashok Vatika and engaged in a gruelling combat with Hanuman. Unable to get an upper hand, Meghnaad used the powerful and divine weapon give to him by Brahmadev, which had the power to tie down the opponent.
But Hanuman had a boon from that very same Brahmadev that no weapon can harm him in any way. But out of respect and reverence for the Creator, the son of Vayu couldn't let that weapon go to waste.
'Yadi yeh mujhe bandhi bana le toh mai Ravan se sidha baat kar sakta hu.' Hanuman thought.
And thus he let that weapon entangle him, and his assumption was correct as Indrajeet directly took him to Ravan. As Hanuman was dragged to the court he looked around at the pomp of the court.
And then his eyes fell on Ravan, he had seen him thrice earlier. But now he saw the king of Rakshasas in his full glory. Ravan was dressed in silken clothes, bedecked in jewel-studded gold ornaments.
His might shown through his personality, he emanated an aura of opulence and brilliance. The son of Vayu was enraptured observing him.
'अहो रूपम अहो धैर्य अहो सत्त्वम अहो द्युति: | अहो राक्षस राजस्य सर्व लक्षण युक्ता ||
यदि अधर्मो न बलवान स्यात अयं राक्षस ईश्वरः | स्यात अयं सुर लोकस्य शस्त्रस्य अपि रक्षिता ||' Hanuman thought sadly. (What figure, what courage, what strength, what splendor and what amalgam of auspicious marks, alas, this king of demons has! Had this lord of demons perhaps not immersed in unrighteousness, he would have been a protector of even the world of celestials together with Indra the lord of celestials.)
Ravan, on the other hand was startled seeing Hanuman.
'Aisa toh nahi yeh Vanar, mere aradhya Shiv Shankar Shambhu ka vahan Nandi ho ? Jisne mujhe bahut poorv shraap diya tha ?' He thought.
But never the less Ravan was furious at him. Not only did Hanuman ravaged Ashok Vatika, he also killed Ravan's son Aksh.
"Prahast ! Pucho iss Vanar se ki yeh kaun hai aur Lanka mei kyu aya hai !" The king of Rakshasas ordered one of his ministers, who immediately obeyed the orders.
"Bhayebhit na ho Vanar, aur hume apna vastavik parichaye do. Yadi tum yeh bata do ki tumhe kisne bheja hai, hum tumhe mukt kardenge. Batao tumhara swami kaun hai ? Indra ? Kuber ? Yam ? Ya woh Vishnu jo sadev hum par vijay paane ki kaamna karta hai ? Hume vishwas nahi ki tum ek vanar ho. Yu toh tumhara roop unke jaisa hai kintu tumhari shakti aur tej unse kai adhik. Yadi swatantrata ke icchuk ho toh satya batao." Prahast said politely.
"Mujhe na Indra ne bheja hai, Na kuber ne, Na Yamraj ne aur Na hi Vishnu ne. Mai toh Sugreev ka sandeshvahak hu. Maine Vatika ka naash kiya taaki mujhe Ravan se milne ka avsar mile. Rakshas-yoddhao ka vadh maine aatm-rakshan mei kiya. Yu toh aisa koi Astra nahi jo mujhe baandh sake, kintu mai bandhne ko sajj huya Ravan se milne hetu. Mai Lanka mei Sugreev ka doot banke aya hu, Shri Ram ke karya ko siddh karne hetu. Mai Sugreev ka sandesh Ravan ko dene aya hu." Hanuman said.
He then proceeded to narrate the tale of Shri Ram, Lakshman and Devi Sita in the court of Ravan. He spoke about the abduction of Devi Sita and friendship between Sugreev and Shri Ram.
Hanuman purposely also told Ravan about how Shri Ram killed Vali with just one arrow, the same Vali who had subjugated the king of Rakshasas himself.
He told about Sugreev's search expedition and his own feat of leaping across 100 yojanas to reach Lanka. He told Ravan to let Devi Sita go, if he wishes well being of his kul and people.
"Maine Devi Sita ko khoj diya hai aur unke dukh jo jaan liya hai. Tum unhe kabhi praapt nahi kar sakte Ravan. Tumhare poorv janmo ke punyo ke karan, tumhe itna Aishwarya praapt huya hai. Kintu pratit ho raha hai ki ab tumhare punya samaapt ho chuke hai aur apne ku-karmo ka fal tumhe milne wala hai. Shri Ram aur Sugreev na hi devta hai aur na hi Asur, woh manushya hai jinse tumhe abhayedaan praapt nahi." Hanuman said.
"Ravan ke rajya-sabha mei aake uss Ram ka gun-gaan karne ka dussahas kaise kiya !? Seniko ! Vadh kardo iska !" The enraged Ravan ordered.
"Avegh mei nirnaye na le Lankesh ! Yeh Vanar ne swayam ka parichaye doot ke roop mei diya hai. Aur doot avadhya hota hai." Vibhishan intervened.
"Kintu kya shatru bhi avadhya hota hai !?" Ravan protested.
"Yeh Vanar humara shatru hai isme koi sandeh nahi. Kintu yeh doot bhi toh hai, jo keval apne swami ka diya karya kar raha hai. Shashtro ke anusaar aap ise dand de sakte hai, jaise sharirik chot dena, kesh mundwana ya kode padwana. Waise bhi iss doot ko maar ke hume kya laabh ? Mrityu dand ke adhikari toh iske swami hai. Yadi aap ise maar denge toh inke swami se yudh kar unhe dandit karne ka avsar aapko nahi milega." Vibhishan said.
"Hmm. Uchit hai. Maine suna hai ki Vanar ki uski puchh atyant priya hoti hai. Seniko ! Aag laga do iski puchh ko aur Lanka mei ghumao ise." Ravan ordered.
