Third POV
The door swung open to reveal Maya with a smile on her face, and Max released the breath she had been holding, feeling pretty glad that it had been Maya to open the door instead of Maya's mom.
"Oh man... I thought you were going to be your mom." Max muttered, taking Maya's hand when she reached out to tug Max in. Maya took Max's backpack and set it down beside the door.
"I figured you'd rather have a familiar face greet you." Maya says and turned around after shutting the door and setting the lock. Maya took Max in slowly then wrapped an arm around Max's waist and pulled her close, Maya's other hand tangling into Max's hair. Max breath caught from the look in Maya's eyes.
"And I wanted to do this."
Maya leaned down and sweetly kissed Max drawing out a soft groan from Max's lips. Max didn't know what it was about Maya, but she always managed to ignite a crazy fire in Max that she couldn't ignore no matter how hard she tried. Max clutched Maya's shoulders.
Someone cleared their throat loudly behind Max, "I asked you to get the door, Maya. I don't recall asking you to makeout with our house guest right in front of it."
Maya immediately pulled away from Max, her eyebrows lifting in surprise and body stiffening almost immediately. Max glanced up at Maya's face, staring at Maya's mother somewhere behind Max with a look of fear in Maya's eyes. Max couldn't see her, but from the tone of her voice, she knew exactly why Maya looked so put off. There was ice cold frost in her voice.
An ice cold that reminded Max of her parents when they found out she was pregnant.
"I'm sorry, ma'am." Maya said, her hold on Max tightening the slightest bit.
"Where are your manners? I taught you better than that." Maya's mother said, sounding irritated, "Well? Introduce me, or do you want to be grounded."
Maya let go of Max, and Max turned around to face Maya's mother. The first thing Max registered was that Ms. McCall was the same height as her, her blonde hair in a sloppy bun. The second thing? The fact that Maya's mom had her arms crossed in front of her chest and was wearing a bathrobe and house slippers. Max wasn't sure what she had expected, perhaps some expensive designer dress, fully coiffed hair, and completely done up makeup, but she was sure that a woman in a bathrobe was not it. Max swallowed thickly, already feeling herself grow nervous as Maya's mother rose her eyebrow. She took a small step back unconsciously and bumped into Maya who put a hand on Max's shoulder comfortingly, though Max wasn't sure if it was more to reassure her or Max.
"Mom, this is Max Mayfield." Maya says introducing Max to her mom. Maya's mother eyed Max for a second before her gaze settled on Max's abdomen. Though her hazel eyes weren't particularly expressing warmth, strangely, Max didn't sense any disdain or disgust in her expression. Just an intrigued curiosity. But she couldn't let her guard down. She had just been caught kissing Maya. By Maya's mother. She'd already made a terrible first impression on someone's parent, and she hadn't had to utter a word to do that. That had to be a new record.
"Max, was it?" Ms. McCall asks smiling and walked forward, reaching out her hand to shake Max's. Max shook Ms. McCall hand carefully, and Maya's mother gripped it tightly.
"I'm Jenna McCall just call Jenna though not Ms. McCall. It's nice to meet Maya's friend that is pregnant."
It was a particularly harsh statement, and Max definitely felt the jab, but Ms. McCall was still smiling congenially. It was hard to tell if she was joking or not.
"Uh... the pleasure is all mine?" Max said, uncertain how to respond to her. Jenna stared at Max for a moment, and Max stared up at her, completely unable to tell what was going through the woman's mind. There was something really chill about her. Hell, the woman was wearing a bathrobe, but Max still felt nervous. Max was honestly glad she had Maya there with her, because Ms. McCall was one intimidating woman.
