An unprecedented need to be close to her wrapped his mind in a mist. As soon as Evelyn announced the end of the auction, Wayne placed his mask on his face and stormed out of the room like an unleashed beast.
Wayne moves quickly – manoeuvring like the predator he is – through the narrow corridors of the underground location. The heart matches his pace, hammering on his ribcage.
He has to find her. Before it's too late.
His senses are on edge. Every sound hits his ears, setting him alert. He cannot catch any scent. The bidders had to drink this potion to cover their scent and therefore their identity. So, he is still far.
The sound of commotion reaches his ears and he instantly stops. A scent – sweet and rich – hits his nostrils, creating a spark within. Multiple women's voices resonate. The collection point is close.
Passing hurriedly a few people standing in his way, he finds an opening at his right and takes the turn. The voices get louder.
He prays only to get there on time.
A bright silver ray of light emerges in his vision. He found it. Wayne's feet merely touch the floor as he jumps forward with every running step he makes. His breath is quick and short. Infused adrenaline spreads all over his body. Only one thing occupies his mind.
His mate.
Before reaching the clearing, he stops abruptly. A dozen men are struggling with the group of fairies, pushing them inside the lorry belonging to the Silver spear pack. He can't see her but her scent is still vivid in this place. She must be here.
Then he spots her, wrapped around her dark cape with the hood covering her features, carried by a man to a sports car further away.
Instinct exceeded his reason and occupies his body. He darts toward the man and hits him from behind. The man drops her from his grasp collapsing unconscious. Wayne's arms reach out and grab her before she hits the floor. With a swift move, he scoops her off her feet bringing her close to his chest.
Before turning, the loud screeching sound of car brakes echoes from behind. Wayne turns to find his car, wrapped around a light veil of dust. The driver's door opens and Rhys gets out, running to the other side to open the passenger door.
Moving rapidly, Wayne puts her inside the car. "I'll take it from here. Thank you, brother." He nods at Rhys giving a strong squeeze on his shoulder before he gets himself in and the engine roars as he hits the petrol.
Wayne doesn't follow the usual path, instead, he goes from other sideroads to confuse whoever might be on their tail. However, that was impossible as they would not be able to get her scent once she got into the car.
But better be safe than sorry...
When they were at a considerably far away distance from the auction point, he stops the car at a small clearing within the forest and turns the engine and lights off. Wayne turns towards the hooded figure sitting beside him. There was no reaction from her since he laid eyes on her, back at the collection point, making him feel uneasy.
Reaching out, he gently grabs the tip of the hood in his fingers, rising up the dark fabric. Amber eyes glow brightly when his gaze falls on her face. His breath catches short in his lungs as her features appear in the faint moonlight.
He couldn't believe it. The girl that first laid eyes on her the night prior to his official visit to Moon river pack – by entering the pack's territory to speculate the surroundings – silently crying in a worn-out tent, praying for the goddess to take her to her. The girl that bumped at him the very following day, running scared the very next moment and ended up throwing everything on the floor upon serving them at the table.
That girl, who had a permanent place in his mind since that day. That had intrigued him in a strange way and wanted to find a way to save her – if he could – ended up being his moon blessed.
How did he not notice it before? He would've remembered if such an occasion indeed happened. He would have to ask Daniel and Lola – the pack healers – for this.
His train of thought vanishes when a soft sigh escapes her lips. Her eyes are closed and she seems hypnotised by some mild drug. He could smell the herbals on her breath. Something – a nightmare or frightful feeling – made her shift in her seat. Wayne leans more to her side and spots a light coat of sweat on her forehead.
"You're safe now. Soon we'll be home." He whispered, stroking softly the side of her face with the back of his fingers.
His attention falls on her full lips, which are trembling. He let his eyes trail down her fragile frame and the reason becomes obvious. Apart from the cape, she's only dressed in a short, see-through nightgown and underwear. Goosebumps spread on her body and her limbs shake. Wayne immediately takes his suit off and puts it above her for cover.
Turning the engine back to life, he turns the lights on and the car moves again. Throughout the drive until they reach Silver spear pack, Wayne struggles to gain control over his wolf's remarkable need for the person next to him. Seeing her in a different attire than the current, on their first encounter, would have made things more manageable. But now, Wayne had to put a lot of effort to control himself.
He takes his phone out of his pocket. Quickly dialling the numbers, he puts it on his ear. Shortly after a voice sounds from the other end of the line. "Meet me at my house in around twenty minutes. Bring Lola with you and your medical equipment," he orders and ends the call.
The gate of Silver spear pack soon appears from the darkness in the distance. Wayne sighs in relief. No one followed them. The guards nod at him when he lowers the window, opening the gate for him to pass. Following the main path, he takes a left turn when he reaches the end of it, leading to his house - a bit isolated from the rest.
The moment the car stops in front of its door, two figures emerge from the shadows - one opens the passenger's door and the other reaches and grabs Wayne's half-fainted mate.
