"Lukas, how sure are you that we're going the right way?" Petra groaned, sagging with every step she took.
"Patience is clearly not your virtue." Lukas retorted.
She stood upright and stopped him from walking any further. "I'm just saying, maybe, that guy sent us in the wrong direction."
"Ellis?" His brows furrowed, processing her accusation. "No. You heard what he said. Jesse came the same way we did."
"Lukas, just look around!" she shouted in frustration. "There's nothing out here. No people, or signs of any living things. Just us. Face it, we got played!"
"They wouldn't lie to us, Petra. We need to keep going." he insisted, pushing through her.
"I think you're missing the point. We've been walking around like idiots for hours, and I just so happen to have put the pieces together. Did you forget where we are? The people here are deceptive, cunning, and unreliable." she grabbed his wrist this time.
"I think you've forgotten that this place changed. It's not the same as we remembered it. You can't seriously tell me that you felt anything but kindness from the people in that town."
"You can't blame me for being a little skeptical," she said truthfully.
Lukas pulled out of her grasp. "We don't have time to be skeptical. I'd prefer to find Jesse before it's too late. For all we know, Romeo's with her, for god's sake. I know she may trust him, but I don't."
Silence passed among them before she finally answered.
"Let's get a move on, then."
Meanwhile...
There was now a pile of sweat on Jesse's face. Dragging more than 100 pounds down a mountain isn't exactly what she'd call easy. She entered the gates and through the doors of the fortress.
"Where's... the med kit?" She breathed heavily, feeling as the lower half of her body became numb.
"Kitchen." he choked out.
Oh, great. Of course, it just so happened to be on the furthest side of the fortress. She slowly made her way to the kitchen, doing everything in her power to keep her legs from giving out. She hobbled to the counter, helping Romeo onto a chair. The absence of the weight was a relief to her aching shoulders. She rolled them back and forth, getting her blood flow back up and running again.
"It's in there," he said, pointing to the cabinet in the corner.
She quickly took out the med kit and returned it back to him. Taking a seat on the opposing chair, she emptied the small plastic container and its contents. Inside were various kinds of bandages, cotton balls, rubbing alcohol, and more random items. She took out the wrap bandage and tape, deciding to begin with his leg, which called for immediate attention.
She stared with intent at the bloody cloth wrapped tightly around it. "This might hurt."
"I can do this myself, Jesse-"
"No. Stay still." She gingerly unraveled the cloth, revealing the deep scars implanted on the flesh.
A short gasp escaped her. She clenched her jaw, reaching for the alcohol while she put a couple of dabs onto a cotton ball.
She hesitantly rolled up his jeans and pressed her free hand on the surrounding skin, preparing to start. Uncertainty passed through her, as she looked up to Romeo for consent. He nodded rapidly, desperately wanting her to get it over with. She took a deep breath before making contact with the open wound, causing a sharp wince to come from him. She did not stop, only trying her best to quicken the process. His groaning calmed down, just a few occasional ones were heard. Once she figured the wound was disinfected, she grabbed the wrap, and looped it several times around his thigh, using tape to secure it.
