"Come in," she answered, still catching her breath from the small fright.
Anyone would think Jesse out of all people wouldn't get startled so easily. She really had to stop doing that. Her eyes widened upon seeing who stood at the door and she propped herself up abruptly.
"I hope I didn't wake you," Lukas spoke, his voice slightly raspy.
Jesse couldn't help but find his sleepy voice attractive.
She managed to prevent her cheeks from going pink. "I've been awake. What about you?"
"Couldn't sleep." He responded, making his way towards Jesse. "I hope you don't mind me coming here."
Jesse smiled at his thoughtfulness. "Not at all. Actually, I'm glad you're here." She patted the bed, motioning for him to sit. "I guess it must feel strange being here again after so long?" She suggested as the reason why he couldn't fall asleep.
"Yeah, maybe..." his voice trailed off.
Jesse noticed how he remained quiet and returned to her writing.
Lukas' eyes darted to the book, and his curiosity peeked. "Whatchu got there?"
She looked up and then back down at her book. "Oh, uh, I just like to write stuff in here once in a while."
Lukas didn't take his eyes off her, clearly interested.
Jesse took the hint that he wanted to see what she was writing but was reluctant to give in. "I'm not really finished with this page yet."
"Are there any others I can see?" he asked further.
Jesse bit her lip. The things she kept in her diary were rather personal. She never let anyone read it and never intended to do so. Not only that, but she found the whole concept of owning a diary embarrassing. She knew Lukas would be the last person to make fun of her, but the thought still lurked in her mind.
Lukas understood Jesse's silence. "That's alright," he said simply, not wanting to pressure her.
Jesse felt slightly guilty about not sharing it with him. The two of them have been through a lot together, it was just some measly pages of writing. But that was just it. To her, they weren't just measly. She told her life's story through her words from all the pain she's felt to the happiness as well.
She placed the pencil inside as she closed the book, putting it off to the side. Not knowing what else to say, she looked deep into his eyes, curious as to what he could be thinking. Out of nowhere, Lukas held his hand to Jesse's cheek, bringing her closer. Lukas' lips brushed against Jesse's, almost unsure of what he was doing or as if asking for permission. Whichever way she could have interpreted as. Jesse's heart stopped, feeling as the heat radiated from her body. Somehow, she brought herself to meet their lips fully together, closing any space that was once between them. Her hands rose around his neck, pulling him in as she furthered their kiss. Did she know what was happening? No. Was she going to stop? Not a chance.
Just a second later, Lukas broke apart, still catching his breath as Jesse did the same.
"Why'd you stop?" Jesse asked, trying to keep her cool, though she was eager for him to continue.
"I don't want to force this on you." He looked to the side, seemingly ashamed. "I love you, Jesse. I would never want to do anything to hurt you."
Jesse's gaze softened as she cupped his cheeks. "I know you'd never hurt me. I want this, Lukas. I have for a long time."
She slightly cringed at her words and the desperation in her tone, but she didn't care anymore. Every word was true, and Lukas deserved to finally know how she felt.
