Nothing could help her escape his embrace. Herobrine's grip was suffocating. Jesse's windpipe had been forced to a close almost completely. Only a small space remained open, allowing her to take a few choked gasps of air. She peeled her watery eyes open to stare down at Romeo's lifeless body as she could only ask herself, how has it come to this?

"Please..." Her voice came out in a whisper.

Herobrine chuckled lightly, tightening his arm around her neck. Soon, she was overcome with a feeling of dizziness. Sound faded from her ears, and blood gradually drained from her brain, leaving a chilled sensation in its absence.

Suddenly, he let out a sharp noise, one that Jesse could not quite depict. Her windpipe slowly reopened to its natural size as she drew in deep breaths. She turned around just in time to watch Herobrine drop to the ground. Her fuzzy vision made it impossible to tell why he had or what had happened to him. All she could focus on was the subtle ringing in her ears, which seemed to grow louder and louder.

Jesse glanced down at herself, finding her overalls drenched in a patch of blood. The blood slipped out of her body just as her consciousness slipped away. The pain was enough to make her feel light-headed like she was drowning in a bottomless lake. Light noises of discomfort were uttered, although they were muffled to her hearing. She took one step, instantly falling to her knees and collapsing against the rocky ground. She lay still, desperately blinking away the stars that flickered in the corners of her vision. The only sound heard was the faint pulse of pain flowing through her veins.

The last thing she saw was the silhouette of a boy with glasses. In his hand- some sort of dagger.

Time skip

Jesse awoke with a blinding, stabbing headache. Her eyes hung halfway open when she was greeted with a familiar bright white surrounding and a continuous beeping. She turned her head slightly to the side, noticing the streaks of darkness that filtered inside through a window in the corner of the room.

How she had gotten there was a mystery, but trying to think about how she did only increased the awful throbbing in her head. A thick needle penetrated her arm and was connected to a long tube containing a dark red liquid. She followed the tube with her eyes and found its end. A few feet from where she lay in bed, someone sat in a chair with an attached needle in their arm. Jesse was able to put two and two together. This person was transferring blood to her. But who was it?

Her eyes trailed up to their face and immediately caught sight of his clean, blonde hair. It fell over his forehead in strands, some wisps stuck to his skin. Lukas' head drooped to one side and his eyes were shut. Seeing him there overwhelmed her with emotions of joy and relief. If she wasn't experiencing such immense pain, she would've given him a big hug.

A small groan escaped her dry lips when she pushed herself to sit upright. The covers slipped down to her waist, exposing a blood-soaked bandage wrapped around her torso. Her eyes went wide and the memories flooded back to her at once. Fear struck her as she remembered everything that happened before she blacked out. She remembered Romeo, the image of his face as he lay on the ground on the verge of death. He couldn't be dead, could he?

"Jesse." Lukas' voice drifted over to her.

She turned her head to see Lukas now standing from the chair. He stared at her with a mix of surprise and concern before approaching her. For a minute, he didn't say anything, seeming as if he wasn't sure what to say. In all honesty, he probably wasn't.

"How- how are you feeling?" He started slowly, speaking in a low voice.

"Everything hurts..." She croaked out in a hoarse voice.
