"Phoebe, what are you doing here?" Sam eyed her as he opened the door for her and leaned against the door frame while crossing his arms in front of his chest.

"i'm here to finally talk to you and since you haven't responded to a single message or call from me in five days, you left me no choice but to come over in person" Phoebe explained before squeezing past Sam's body that was blocking almost the entire doorway and entering his home.

"And I don't plan on leaving until we work this out, Sammy. You're my best friend and I don't want to fight with you anymore" she added as she flopped down on the couch and crossed her legs.

"We're not fighting, Phoebe,...I'm just disappointed and needed to get a few days away from you, from both of you" Sam, who had followed her into the living room, stopped in front of the couch and eyed Phoebe.

"I know" Phoebe sighed "and you have every right to be. We fucked up. We wanted to tell you, we really did. We just didn't find the right situation and honestly, we were both a little scared of it" she admitted.

"Scared? You were afraid to tell me you were fucking each other regularly? Really now?" Sam asked, startled. "can you blame us? You almost kicked my door in when you just suspected Joe and I were doing something naughty in my room" Phoebe mumbled.

"Speaking of which, Joe was with you then, wasn't he?" Sam raised an eyebrow questioningly. Phoebe nodded with a sigh. "Yeah, he was" she muttered. "I knew it" Sam groaned.

"And well, when we decided to make it friends with benefits a day later, we decided together that we wouldn't tell you for now. We both suspected you'd kill us if you found out" Phoebe shrugged.

"Besides, we wanted to try it out first to see if it would even work with us before we caused unnecessary drama and we quit after two weeks and it was all for nothing" she added.

"And when the two weeks were up, it still didn't occur to you guys that you could tell me?" Sam asked, slowly sitting down on the couch while keeping a close eye on Phoebe.

"We...had other things to do when we saw each other, we never talked about how and more importantly when to tell you. There...just hasn't been the right moment" Phoebe clarified.

"Do the others know? Ja'Marr and all?" Sam asked. "Ja'Marr doesn't know anything. Tris knowing was more or less unavoidable and Kim...she found out too" Phoebe explained.

"How did she discover it?" Sam asked with interest. "She saw that" carefully Phoebe pulled the neckline of her shirt down a bit, exposing a few of the hickeys Joe had given her.

"Oh god" Sam stared into Phoebe's neckline a little overwhelmed before blinking and taking his eyes off her. "Pull that back up please...I...this is a little too...private" he stammered.

Phoebe had to grin as she straightened her shirt before sighing and looking at Sam. "Sammy, what I want to tell you is that I'm sorry you found out this way, and I know Joe and I should have told you, but it has nothing to do with us not trusting you. We just...didn't know how you would react."

Sam moved a little closer to Phoebe, sighing. "I know and...I can kind of understand you guys too. I just wish I would have found out from you guys and not because of a damn hoodie" he grinned.

"so we're good? You...you're not going to keep ignoring me?" Phoebe asked uncertainly, leaning against Sam's shoulder. "we're good, Pheebs" he smiled and put an arm around Phoebe and hugged her to him.

"You know, Joe came to see me this morning too and told me something similar. Seems really important to you guys that I'm ok with this" Sam told. "Joe talked to you?" Phoebe asked, surprised.

"Yeah, didn't he tell you about that?" Sam asked confused. Phoebe shook her head with a sigh. "We...we haven't talked since Thursday night. It...it was kind of awkward knowing that you were disappointed in us, you know?" she mumbled.

"Oh, okay" Sam muttered. "Anyway, he asked me if I was reacting that way, if it bothered me that much because maybe I did want something from you or because it bugged me that I never had a chance with you, can you imagine?" he laughed.

Phoebe grinned. "For some reason he can't understand that we both never, ever thought there could be anything more going on between us" Sam nodded in agreement. "It...it was just a close friendship from the beginning and never more and in a way I'm glad about that too" he grinned. Phoebe nodded with a laugh.

"But, Sammy, if...if that's not what...what is it? What is it about the thought that bothers you so much?" she asked quietly. Sam shrugged his shoulders. "I...I don't know, to be honest. Like I said, the fact that you're more or less in a committed physical relationship now, that...that's more comforting to me, but...but somehow I still feel like I have to protect you from something"

"Protect me? From what?" Phoebe asked, surprised. "Well, I...I know how it is with you and boys, Phoebe. Either you get bored after a few weeks and drop them or the boys drop you and you get your heart broken" Sam explained.

"oh, Sammy. Honestly, it's sweet that you're so worried about me, but...we can't avoid the possibility of one of us getting hurt. But you know Joe and me well enough. Neither of us would hurt the other one on purpose" Phoebe clarified. "If it happens, it happens. We can't predict the future, we can't control it, you can't control it"

"Yeah, I know that" Sam sighed "We can only promise you that if it happens, we won't make you choose between either of us, ok? you're my best friend, but you're also Joe's best friend and Joe and I are grown up enough to deal with each other normally, even if it ends badly" Phoebe assured him.

"Are you so sure about that? I mean, when you guys couldn't stand each other in the beginning, you almost killed each other with looks as soon as you just saw the other one, when...when there's been so much going on between you now, can you really be in the same room as him?" Sam asked, concerned.

Phoebe nodded. "I will be able to, no matter how hard it gets, because I don't want you to suffer because Joe and I screwed up, I promise."

Sam pulled her close with a sigh. "You know, you're like a little sister to me. I just want to protect you from everything. I saw you after breakups, Pheebs. It wasn't nice to see you so heartbroken"

"You can't protect me from everything, Sammy. I have to be allowed to make mistakes, my God, I make enough mistakes, I have to go through the pain so I can learn, so I can grow" Phoebe clarified.

"Besides, shouldn't it make you feel better that at least this guy is your best friend? I mean, surely you trust Joe to treat me right more than a stranger, right?" she grinned at him.

"Yeah, I do, ...although I wish your relationship wasn't all sex" Sam shrugged. Phoebe laughed as she leaned back against Sam. "Sorry to disappoint you, but our relationship is and will remain purely physical" she grinned.
