"Finally come to your senses and decide to work with your old man?" My Father smirked when Grant and I entered his office.
"No Sir. Not at all. I'm here as a friend to Grant and nothing more." I replied coldly.
"I called him here, sir. I thought I could persuade him perhaps better than you could." Grant explained with a nervous laugh.
My Father wasn't really that intimidating. He was around six foot tall, dark hair that seemed to hold steady despite age. If I had to admit it, I suppose I would be lucky to age as well as he has. He was always kind to everyone who worked for him, only seemed to save the anger and rage for me.
Grant and my Father both began pitching their idea to me. They had a new account they were wanting to lock down as a consulting firm. It seemed this firm was one I had worked with in the past when I briefly entertained working for my Father. Most of the firm's my Father worked with were in other towns, seeing as ours was incredibly small. This specific firm employed an ex-girlfriend of mine and we had not ended on good terms at all.
"How am I supposed to help in this scenario?" I asked, annoyed to even be sitting here, cursing myself for having come here. Then I thought about Quinn. If I hadn't come here, I wouldn't have been able to help her. I wondered how her interview was going and where or what she would be doing. I got lost in my thoughts that I missed most of what my Father was saying.
"You can wine and dine her, never know it might rekindle something and we can all close the deal." Dad laughed, leaning back in his seat.
"Are you serious right now? Denise was the worst mistake I ever made. I'm not going anywhere near her." I could feel the rage building up inside of me just talking about her. Straight out of college, I come and work for my Father like the good son he wanted. I meet someone and spend a year of my life devoted to her only to find her fucking an intern on her office desk. On top of that? It was our anniversary and I was surprising her for lunch. Seems she was already having her meal though in the form of a tiny dick.
In truth, I hadn't been that happy before that, I hated the job and was restless. I enjoy the small farm I had purchased, I liked being outside and working with my hands. Denise hated every bit of it, but I kept trying to make it work. I suppose I should be grateful for her slutty ways, she freed me from a career I wasn't invested in and from a future with her living in a miserable marriage with the two point five kids.
"Wade, please. We've presented to them several times and every single time, she asks for you. You are the condition. She wants to meet with you, to see you. What's so wrong with that?" Dad continued.
"Everything?" I should've been surprised but I wasn't. While he was kind to those in his employ, he was ruthless in all other aspects. My Mother saw that eventually and while she may have waited a little too long, she did get out and find her happiness. "This is business, nothing about my personal life should be part of any deal you make with anyone, ever."
"Wade."
"Jesus." I stood, holding my fists at my sides. "This is the most fucked up thing I think I've heard in a long time. You knew about this?" I gestured angrily to Grant. He of course kept his head down, stupid fucker I was going to kick his ass later for this. "She fucked someone else on her desk, in this office building on our anniversary, Father. When I tried to break up with her after that, she faked a pregnancy, any of this ring a bell?" I lifted my ball cap up, feeling the heat rolling off my body.
"Don't raise your voice at me boy. That was a few years ago. People change."
Before I could respond, his assistant was buzzing him letting him know that Carrie and her guest were ready for him. Carrie had worked here for years and was probably the only other person besides Grant from the office that I still spoke with. She was career driven and kind and also in love with women. Grant chased her for the longest time before she finally broke the news to him and I think broke a little piece of his heart in the process. Served him right, asshole. He kept giving me apologetic looks while we waited for Carrie and the guest to come in, I just shook my head letting him know he was in shit. The door opened and Carrie rushed in, I didn't look up, keeping my gaze on my Father and wondering how I came from such a clueless and cold individual.
"Christopher Wade Asher! About time you showed your face around here." She spoke with love, grabbing me and pulling me toward her for a hug. I laughed and returned the hug, looking behind her seeing Quinn standing nervously by the door.
"Quinn." I breathed out, releasing Carrie from my arms. Grant looked at me quickly then turned to look at the beautiful woman waiting by the door, looking very unsure of herself. He turned back to me with a questioning look.
"Yes, this is Quinn Gordon." Carrie smiled, pulling Quinn closer. "Quinn, this is Mr. Asher, Grant and Wade, though I get the impression you two have already met." She winked at me.
"Hello." Quinn squeaked out. My Father stepped from behind his desk, reaching his hand out to hers.
"Welcome to the family Ms. Gordon. If Carrie is impressed with you then I trust you will do wonderfully." Quinn's cheeks flushed pink as he spoke, ever the charmer he was. "This young man over here, this is Grant Mayfield. You'll be assisting him. If he gives you any trouble, you come see me, okay?" He teased her while she nodded with a smile.
"Last but not least, this is . ." My Father started to introduce us.
"We've met." I spoke up, looking Quinn in her beautiful eyes.
"Yes, thank you again." She spoke barely above a whisper.
"Oh, well do tell." Dad looked between the both of us, nosey bastard.
"Um, well I had some car issues. Wade, or um, Mr. Asher was kind enough to stop and offer assistance." Quinn spoke nervously. I felt bad, not wanting to out her situation.
"It's Wade. Please, he's Mr. Asher." I nodded toward my Father. She smiled at me before nodding.
