Quinn ran out of the room so quickly that neither Carrie nor I could say a word. We both just looked at each other in confusion. I stood and began clearing up the food mess while Carrie came over to stand near the counter.
"Ok, so what's going on here?"
"I have no idea."
"No, with you two." She cocked her head to the side.
"Nothing. I was letting her stay here since everything went to shit last night. What's going on here with you? Why are you here?" I leaned over the counter, glaring at her.
"I spoke with Grant. I felt bad and thought I'd take her out to get some new clothes. Have some girl time. I like her, she's nice and I know she hasn't made a lot of new friends yet." Carrie answered.
"That's nice. Let me go talk to her, I think she's probably just anxious with everything that's gone on. Her apartment was a disaster." I explained.
"Sure, I'll wait here."
When I got to the spare room and spoke to Quinn, I thought perhaps I had read the whole situation wrong. She really was just ready to leave and get to work. When she blurted out her assumption that Carrie was my girlfriend, I nearly choked on a laugh. Then I realized if she was worried about Carrie being my girlfriend, perhaps she was interested in me. I was oddly excited at that idea.
"Nothing to be sorry about; I suppose I could see how you'd make that assumption. Regardless though, it's not the case, and she wants to take you shopping if you'd like to go." I stepped a little closer to her this time, smirking as I did so. It was probably mean of me, but I was curious to see her reaction to me now that I had a better idea that she might be attracted to me. I ran my hand through my hair, sighing as I waited for her response. She stood, staring at me, her big hazel eyes taking me all in.
"I guess I should go, be polite since I ran off like that." She chewed her bottom lip, a move I found incredibly sexy. She started to gather her things again, and despite better judgment, I decided to speak.
"Leave your things; it's fine. You're welcome to stay as long as you need to."
Quinn looked at me, her mouth opening and closing like a fish. I looked down at my feet, nervously waiting for her response.
"I don't know."
"Go do your thing with Carrie; you can decide after that." I smiled. She stood, thinking for a moment. "Quinn, I promise it's fine." She finally nodded with a smile, and we headed back out and down the stairs. She and Carrie spoke for a moment before finally heading out together.
As soon as the girls left, I grabbed my keys and headed out to the office.
"I've seen you twice in like two weeks; what do I owe the pleasure?" Grant kicked back at his desk.
"Well, we used to hang out pretty regularly until someone became a workaholic." I countered.
"Yeah. So, you're not here to help us with Denise?"
"Fuck no! Why can you guys not take no for an answer?"
"Fine. I'll put a pin in that for a minute. Why are you here?" He leaned forward with an all-knowing smirk.
"Why are you smirking at me?"
"I have a feeling I know why you are here." He took his glasses off, wiping the lenses for a moment. "Does it have anything to do with the newest employee, new in town, beautiful brunette?" Grant raised a brow.
"I don't know." I rubbed my temples, trying to process my thoughts.
"She's gorgeous. She's an amazing assistant. If she weren't working here, I'd be very tempted to ask her out. Hell, I'm very tempted to ask her out regardless."
"Oh really?"
"You haven't noticed?" The asshole continued with his little game.
"Grant. Quit being a dick."
"You quit being a pussy; ask her out if you're interested, and it's obvious that you are. Has it been that long that you have to come to me for help?" He rolled up the sleeves of his button-down shirt.
"She kind of has a lot going on right now, being new in town, the whole apartment thing. I also have this bullshit with you, my Dad, and whatever deal he wants to make with Denise and company. I feel like it's probably a bad idea to even think about asking her out right now."
Grant rolled his eyes at me. This man didn't think about anything other than business. When it came to women, he jumped head-first into their beds and dealt with any repercussions later. I suppose if that's what made him happy, then why not.
"If you don't ask her out, then I might just have to. She will be traveling with me next month."
"Leave her alone. She's too nice for your hump-and-dump bullshit." I growled.
"Ah, protective already, I see. Come on, let's go have some lunch." He stood, grabbing his suit jacket. "If we head out now, you might be lucky enough to avoid your Dad."
It was nice of Grant to think positively on my behalf, but I wasn't that lucky. Just as soon as we stepped onto the elevator, I was met with the same emerald eyes I was used to seeing each day in the mirror. I nodded my head in greeting, not sure what to even say.
"Mr. Asher, heading to lunch?" Grant chirped.
"Not exactly. I'm going to meet with some of the staff at Scholts. A working lunch, if you will." He replied, looking hatefully at me. Scholts is the firm that Denise worked for. "Perhaps you two should join me?" He raised a brow with a mischievous look.
"We're actually on our way to a meeting ourselves. I'll keep you posted." Grant jumped in. I looked back and forth from him to my Father, seeing if he had bought the lie. Seemingly pleased with himself, Grant patted my Father on his back as we exited the elevator as soon as the doors opened.
