Aw jeez. I didn't mean to take so long to upload the final chapter. Life hasn't been very kind to me lately but I'll spare you the details. I'm doing my best to type this with one hand as I'm afraid I won't be able to use the other for a while. By the time I finish this, Christmas and New years should be in a few days, so happy holidays!

I flopped down on the soft beige couch, nearly landing on Wilbur. Wilbur gave me a dirty look before turning his attention back to the tv. The light from the tv lit up the dark room as I stared up at the ceiling fan, slowly spinning above us, fighting against the summer heat. I sighed and glanced outside. It was still dark, but it was too hot to sleep so we had gotten up early.

It had been a year since we had escaped the world of darkness. Upon exiting the portal, we found ourselves laying on the soft green grass outside the cabin we had been staying at. The sun shone brightly above us and the birds chirped in the trees. It was as if nothing had been wrong. We had to get into the cabin through an open window, as Wilbur had lost the key in the dark world. Our belongings were no longer there and a thin layer of dust coated everything as if nobody had been living there for a while.

Torn police tape had laid limply on the deck outside the front door while some windows had been boarded up, casting the place in shadows. I couldn't stand being in the dark after what happened, so I stood outside while Wilbur called the police. The police were surprised to see us alive and instantly bombarded us with questions. We didn't know what to tell them, as we obviously couldn't tell them we were sucked down to some kind of dark hell world.

Eventually, Wilbur told them we had fallen into a cave. This story had made sense to the police and reporters, as it turned out there was an old condemned coal mine in the forest by the cabin. It had been abandoned for years, but apparently, there were some entrances nearby that were still open and easy to fall into. When I asked Wilbur about how he knew, he replied that the website he used to book the cabin warned of those entrances. We told them we had survived by drinking water we found in the mine and by eating rats that had been living down there. We weren't sure if anyone would believe that story, but thankfully, it seemed like it worked.

Our family and friends were overjoyed to have us back. We had been missing for about 3 months, and they weren't sure if we were going to make it back home. Once we got back, it was as if nothing changed. We both went about our lives as if nothing happened, but deep down, I knew I would never forget the 3 months in the dark world.

I still think back and realize how different things could have gone. We were both so lucky to still be here today. At any point, we could have met some dark bloody end down there and nobody would have ever known what had happened. I fight back a shiver as I think of dying down there all alone in the dark. It didn't matter now. All that mattered was that we were both here.

The shrill ring of Wilbur's phone forced me out of my thoughts.

"Hello?" Wilbur said into the phone.

I tuned Wilbur out and stared at the tv. I assumed he was talking to one of his friends. However, I quickly turned my attention back to Wilbur as snippets of his conversation reached my ears. Wilbur was talking about the cabin and the 3 months we had been gone. I watched Wilbur, trying to piece together the conversation until Wilbur finally hung up and turned to me.

"Tommy, the hole." He gasped. "It's back."

Upon hearing this news, I quickly drove the 2 hours up the mountain to the cabin. I needed to see it for myself. Wilbur had tagged along, but he told me he would not accompany me to the hole. He must not have wanted to be reminded of the horrors we witnessed down there. In the car, Wilbur filled me in on what had happened. Apparently, his friend who had been staying at the cabin noticed a large gaping hole in the yard that filled the air with the smell of burning hair. The description of the hole matched perfectly with the one we had fallen into.
