MAX was pretty sure her ending was coming. It seemed to her as if the entire world was screaming at her: "You'll be dead soon!" She was also aware that her letters wouldn't help anyone feel better after her death. Especially, her sister. But, there was much unsaid that in her final hours, she couldn't bring herself to say. So, writing letters for everyone, did make her feel a little bit better. Still, she didn't want to die. She might've wished for it before, but she wasn't ready. Besides, she had barely lived. She was just fifteen! Max wanted to see the world, with her sister. She wanted to go to Europe, see the Eiffel Tower, the Big Ben. She wanted to go to Rome, Barcelona. She wanted to visit Greece, which Lennon mentioned to be carefree and spontaneous. Or so she had read.
Max wanted to be more than she was. She wanted to see El again. She wanted to go back to California for a while, maybe even see her father. And honestly, she sometimes wished that her life was just like it was before Hawkins. Then, she would regret that thought, because if it wasn't because of what happened, she wouldn't have met her best friends. But what she wanted the most, was to grow old. And Lennon... she wanted the same for her little sister.
And, as the eldest Mayfield sister walked down the stairs of the Wheeler's basement, a cup of coffee warming her cold hands, she was surprised when she saw the beige envelope in the boys's hands, "What's that?" She asked as she stepped besides her sister, who avoided her gaze.
Max grabbed the cup, making her furrow as she placed it on the coffee table. Lucas, Steve and Dustin watched as Max nervously gave Lennon her letter "Don't read it yet." She warned, sending Dustin a side-glance to remind him, as he had tried to open it before. Lennon furrowed as she stared at own name, knowing exactly what her sister had written.
Lennon looked at her sister, wondering just how hopeless she was "Why?"
"You know why." She simply replied, not missing a beat. Lennon's frown deepened, her eyes going back to the letter she didn't know if she would read. Should she write something as well? Was everything she said to Nancy enough? Did Max know just how much her sister really loved her? Honestly, Lennon felt better not letting her sister know every part of her feelings, because Lennon felt like a broken piece of glass, and she didn't want to cut Max with any part of herself. Wordlessly, Max walked past her sister to grab a walkie-talkie that was on top of a table. Steve and Lennon shared a look as he tried to silently ask her how she was, but she went back to glance at her sister as she couldn't give him a positive answer "If we go to East Hawkins, will this still reach Pennhurst?"
"Of course. Yeah." Dustin replied.
"Wait. Why are we talking about East Hawkins?" Steve wondered, receiving a look from Max that immediately made him shake his head while his ex-girlfriend sighed "No. No. No!" They had been told to stay at the basement, and he promised Nancy that he would at all times, have his eyes on the Mayfield sisters.
Max gave Lennon a pleading look, hoping she would be on her side. Lennon knew exactly where she wanted to go, because she had done the same thing many times. To the cemetery to talk to Billy. Sometimes Lennon went just to tell his grave how much she hated him, although it didn't cure the grief. And sometimes, she went there to talk to her childhood best friend. The only one who knew the whole truth about her. It soothed her, thinking about him as if he had never grown up. As if he hadn't turn out into a misogynist, racist, abusive, piece of shit. Understanding that Max needed some kind of closure, Lennon nodded gently "Let's go." Max mentally clapped as she followed her sister out of the basement.
