**Prologue**
•Erin's POV•
"Erin! Hurry up and get in here, you have chores to do!" A woman's voice shouted coldly across the house.
Yup, this was my daily wake up call... My name is Erin Lyon, and I'd like to say my life is fairly pleasant... however, I'd be lying most of those days. I live with my sister, Jessica, and her family which includes my two precious inspirations: my niece and nephew. Though, I have other siblings, she was the only one here to take me in. Regardless, I am here, and I definitely don't belong here: a blonde amongst a family of black haired relatives. This has always been a factor in my life, being that I am the only child my mom had that was born with blonde hair. Probably why there were so many jokes about me being adopted, which oddly enough I really wasn't...
Aside from that, music is my only true escape from reality; though truth be told, my talents remain hidden for reasons unsaid. I've tried to reveal my musical potential in the past, but I choke up and stop. Apparently it's a part of my "unique personality." In this house though, there's no place for my "stupid endeavours" or "analytical bullshit" as Jessica would say. She can't stand half of the choices I'm making for my future, including all of the rigorous college courses I'm taking in high school. She prefers I live in this tower forever, cleaning and cooking and babysitting at her whim.
How'd I end up here you might ask? Well, that's an even longer story. My parents were divorced when I was merely 6 months old, when my mom packed us up from Washington and moved out here to Florida.
Then a few years ago my mother just packed up and left one day, not a note or any clue where she went besides the keys to the house lying on the cold kitchen counter. Running to "daddy" was also out of the question, since I never knew him and he had passed away about 10 years ago, or so I was told. I've always felt a hint of hatred towards him for leaving me, but I couldn't put it past him since I didn't know why he did it. While other little girls went to father-daughter dances with their daddys, I stayed home and cried silent tears into my pillow. Now, I just blow it off like it's an every day event, not having a father.
So I was taken in as the 'nanny' I like to say, since cleaning and babysitting are my primary activities besides school.
Speaking of which, I'm finally almost in the clear. I graduate this year, and on top of waiting for college acceptance letters and final preparation for graduation, my 18th birthday is tomorrow! Freedom seems to be just over the horizon now, I can almost taste it... Though, I only have one plan for my birthday: to finally leave this place, and fast!
Little did she know, it would be much sooner than she thought....
