So this oneshot is sort of a collaboration with Avengerssoulmate , we are using the same character, same prompt, & the line "what is this between us?" to create our own version of the story of a half-hobbit, half-human who is a friend of Gandalf & is sent to redesign Lord Elrond's garden that he sometimes has meetings in. The love interest is obviously Lindir (if you couldn't tell by the title).

Avengerssoulmate has already posted the first part of their version, so please check it out! Trust me, you will love it!

——

"Gandalf, why on Middle Earth would you recommend me, of all creatures, to Lord Elrond, of all creatures? I would stumble upon the sight of the elven lord! I've never seen an elf! Oh my...I'm too lowly! He's going to think me...strange!"

Gandalf simply lit his pipe, leaning back in the creaky wooden chair beneath him. I sighed, exasperated by the wizard's habit of telling powerful creatures of my talents.

I—as a half-hobbit, half-human—was not one for attention. My strange stature and mannerisms attracted enough eyes as it was, never mind redesigning Lord Elrond's gardens! Such a task certainly would attract attention to me!

Gandalf blew a smoke ring into the air, coughing slightly. He cleared his throat and straightened himself out, then sat up slightly.

"It is a simple fact you are the best gardener I know. Why would I not recommend you? After the fires in Laketown, you aided the men in replanting much of their greenery and gardens, which was wonderfully done and remains a spectacle to all who live there. Who would have thought plants could be aquatic? You, of course!"

The wizard stood up from his seat, the wooden chair shrieking against the wooden floorboards. I stood up as well, following him to the door.

"I need to think about this. I don't know if I can do it," I admitted, ringing my hands. The greyed wizard offered me a rarely seen smile, placing a gentle hand on my shoulder.

"If anyone can do it, you can," Gandalf reassured softly as he squeezed my shoulder. He moved his hand to the door, fingers grazing the golden handle. "You have two days to leave should you decide to take up the offer. Do let me know should you decide to not go altogether, I have a second gardener in mind if you don't...although Lord Elrond will not be as happy with his work."

And with that, the grey wizard was out the door, and I was left to get packing. No matter how much I felt the little wriggle of anxiety in my gut, I knew that I had to help Lord Elrond.

——

The little wriggle of anxiety returned as the beautiful city steps came into view. I shot a nervous glance at Gandalf, who rode beside me on a white horse. He spared me no look as he and his steed surged forward with intention to greet the elven lord first before introducing me. I glanced down to the brown horse below me.

"I'm so nervous, Arisaema. I hope they like me and my work," I admitted softly to the horse. The horse let out a small breath of air, ambling along slowly, as we were nearly caught up to Gandalf. I sighed, sitting up properly. I would have to worry about these things on my own, it seemed; not even my noble friend could see reason for me to feel so anxious.

Gandalf dismounted his horse as Arisaema finally caught up to him. I slowly swung my leg over, hopping down from the tall creature. I patted the horse gently on her side, turning to the esteemed elven lord and his auxiliary.

My eyes widened at the sight of the beautiful creatures. Until this point, I had never seen visages of such allure. Both ellons wore long, dark hair, intricately styled away from their faces. Their robes were long as well: Lord Elrond donned indigo robes and his auxiliary donned silver. They wore circlets upon their heads, Lord Elrond's being obviously more intricate with a large gem in the centre, but his auxiliary's was no less so, with branches of silver intricately welded together.
