Aria and Luke sit in the principal's office in silence. There's a slight pain in her knuckles as the fragile skin starts to turn purple. Whereas, Luke's eye has started to swell, the skin red preparing for bruising.
The principal, Rebecca, had already called their parents and sent out an email. The usual. This is the first time the two have actually been in trouble with the school, in the past they've managed to get away with a lot more.
"This is your fault." Luke mutters, holding up an ice pack to his eye.
"I beg to differ." Aria replies, whispering under her breath, "If you hadn't said a flat out lie about my family we wouldn't be in this mess."
"I hate you."
"I'm so offended." She retorts.
The sound of heels clicking appears, Rebecca steps into her office and sits herself at the desk. Hands placed in front of her, resting on her laptop as she takes a deep breath. "You two have been a displeasure to have in classes." She says, "You two can't be together and you've done more harm than good."
Aria looks at the woman. She's kept her head down for the past three years, never causing much trouble around school. This has all been a big misunderstanding, something that Aria can definitely weasel her way out of. The only problem being that there was a witness, and that witness just had to be the principal.
"You both are amazing students, though I've taken a look at your records and neither of you have signed up for any extra curricular except for mandatory service groups." Rebecca says, "Look, I could suspend you both, but considering the trouble you've put your peers in I feel that isn't enough."
"What do you mean?" Aria asks, "Wouldn't suspending us be a lot easier?"
"Yes, but maybe you can help your community." Rebecca says, "Instead of risking your reputation with universities, or giving you detention, I've taken it up with multiple teachers and they propose you do service within the school."
"What?" Luke says, bringing the ice pack down from his face.
"Well, you two would stay after school and help the community." She clarifies, "We're hosting a Mock UN in the week after next, there's a school play, the yearbook club is understaffed. We could use your help with this stuff."
"So, we're doing a glorified community service?" Aria says.
"I wouldn't say that," Rebecca corrects, "think of it as a way to build up your university applications and resumes. Aria, what are you thinking of studying?"
"Politics and sociology."
"Perfect! Having you around for our mock UN will be a perfect example, demonstrating your leadership abilities." Rebecca smiles, trying to convince the two that this is a perfect opportunity for them. "Of course, you'll be helping out with admin, press and tech, you two will be supervising."
"Okay, but what about the rest? And how long are we expected to do this for?" Luke questions, not wanting to spend his senior year with Aria.
"Well, after MUN ends, you two will help out with the production of the play, mainly painting the sets and being involved with costumes." She explains, "You'll switch between set design and helping out with the yearbook and taking photos of the extracurriculars. This is a great CAS experience for the two of you."
"So, do we start in October," Aria asks. "MUN, then working on the play, and the yearbook?"
"No, maybe I've been phrasing things wrong." Rebecca says, "You two will be working simultaneously within these groups. Amongst others, throughout the year."
