Summer.

Aria fully believes that the essence of summer break has lost all of its meaning now that there's no school to go back to in August – well, there is, but there's no dread at the end of the road – no more waking up at six in the morning to get ready for an eight hour day – no stress and no worries, just goodbyes.

She graduated high school! She's off to university in the fall, and until then, she's on an extended summer break where she's free to sit around in bed for three months doing absolutely nothing – and realistically, she'll probably spend her first few months of university doing the same thing.

So, yes, summer break has lost its essence to her – if any of that makes sense.

However, it's probably been the most eventful summer in a while, considering everyone has been fixed on hanging out every day of the week since this is the last time they'll ever be able to do so. Each person and group are rushing to see one another before someone leaves forever.

Which is exactly what they're all doing now.

Her sunglasses cover her eyes, her knees pulled in, and the air around her smelling of artificial mango as she blows smoke to the sky. Music plays through a large speaker, and the boys yell and splash at one another in the pool while Sade coughs and complains about the taste of beer next to Aria.

The girls sit on the sidelines, on the garden couches in the shade, talking about useless and uneventful topics like TSA locks and Sade's plans to create a business selling the things she'll eventually crochet.

"I don't understand how people like this shit," Sade coughs, wiping the spilled drink from the corners of her mouth with a frown, "it's nasty." However, the girl still returns for another sip, accepting the soft drink Aria hands her to drown out the bitter taste.

"I'm convinced no one actually likes the taste," Aria comments, taking the bottle from Sade and bringing it to her lips. "They just drink to drink."

"Yeah," Sade mumbles, "but why drink if you're not drinking to get drunk? I don't get it." She snorts, resting against the couch and staring at the boys who are... well, entertaining themselves by throwing a volleyball in the air and relishing in theatrics.

"Dunno," Aria shrugs, readjusting her position – resting her legs on top of Sade's and placing a pillow behind her back as she lays down. "It's like, why do half of teenagers vape? Not to feel the nicotine rush; we all just do it to do it." She adds.

"Hmm, fair point," Sade nods.

From the pool, Jonah sends the ball flying, and it lands on the grass close to the girls – who, obviously, stare at the stranded ball and make no move to give it back to the boys. "Can one of you throw it back to us?" Jonah asks, leaning on the edge.

The girls do not intend to get into the water or get up from their spot on the couch. Aria is simply too comfortable to move, and Sade's – unfortunately – barricaded in by Aria's legs. Besides, they have other reasons why they'd rather not get wet.

"What?" Sade asks, having not heard Jonah due to Aria moving onto another conversation topic and rambling about lord knows what – either the most recent movie she just watched, or her yearly fixation with re-watching the Vampire Diaries every summer, or some random pop culture fun fact that involves thirty-minutes of background information.

"The ball!" Calum says, "Can you guys get it for us?"

"You have legs," Sade replies, "get it yourself."

"Yeah," Calum groans, pointing to the stranded ball covered in loose grass and dirt, "but it's on the grass! And you guys are just sitting there doing nothing."
