NIKOLAI EVANS

"I'm evidently interrupting, just pretend you didn't see me. I'm gonna leave." She said awkwardly, looking between the three of us.

"No, no. Come in, honey."

"Honestly, ma'am, it's fine. I'll come back later."

"Don't be silly, come." Mum insisted. In that moment I just want to disappear. I felt my cheeks heating up more and I know my face was visibly red at this point. I dropped my head on the table, hoping they'd all just forget I'm here. "What's your name?"

Of course Mum decides to start a conversation with her.

"I'm Amari Rousseau."

"That accent, french?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"Oh no, please call me Ellie. This is my husband Alexander, we're Nikolai's parents."

"It's nice to meet you both." Amari said politely.

"You're really beautiful, Amari."

"Thank you."

"Are you dating my son?" My head shot up from the table and I got up from my seat, standing between Mum and Amari.

"Mum, please stop."

"Nikolai, stop being rude. You're disturbing my conversation with this gorgeous girl." She said as she pushed me to the side. "So are the two of you dating?"

"No, we're not. We're just friends."

"Why, do you already have a boyfriend?"

"Nope."

"So you're single."

"Very much so." I mean at least she's not dating Daniel. That's a plus, right?"

"Good, you can be Nikolai's date for my party."

"Mum!" I yelled out. She did not just ask that.

"I don't know how appropriate that'll be, Ellie. He's my boss."

"And he's also you're friend so it's fine. It's next week Saturday. I will not take no for an answer."

"Mum, I'm begging you. Please stop. Dad get her to stop."

"I've learned not to come between your mother and whatever plans she has set out. She's started, now, she'll finish." He whispered, looking between Mum and Amari as they spoke.

"I'll have to see if my dad is free to stay at home with my son." Amari said nervously.

"You have a son?"

"Yeah, he's 5."

"Aw, he's the same age as the twins, he can play with them. The twins, Millie and Myles, are my other son's children."

"Yeah, I've met them. They're adorable."

"I take it your coming then, as Nikolai's date."

"Sure, I'll be there." My jaw dropped in shocked. What just happened?

"Good, we have to go but we'll see you next week." Amari nodded as they both left the office, leaving us alone.

"Wow, your mum is... intense." She said with a laugh.

"Listen, I am so, so sorry. You don't have to go if you don't want to."

"Don't worry, it's ok. I'll go. I wasn't planning on doing anything on that day anyway."

"God, that was so embarrassing." I mumbled, slumping into my seat.

"Yeah, you looked like you wanted the ground beneath you to just swallow you whole." I watched her as she grinned and it brought a smile to my face.
