He Chang's fists clenched. He moved forward and grabbed Ruo An's hand.

'Your highness, but you won't know what that despicable prince is up to!'

Ruo An frowned and shook his hands away.

'I said I will be fine so I will be fine. I want you to promise me that Xiao Ning will be safe in your hands.' Said Ruo An resolutely.

He Chang stared at his beloved woman in a daze. His gaze carrying a hint of dissatisfaction and anger as he lowered his head respectfully.

'This one promise.'

Ruo An smiled and nodded

'Go and look after him. I will retreat to my chambers for the night.'

So saying, the princess walked away and headed towards her chamber without one glance back, leaving He Chang to stand there alone.

He Chang breathed slowly, trying to calm his anger. His beloved woman who he had painstakingly tried to get close to, had just pushed him away. He felt absolutely crushed.

'Ahh!'

He Chang turned around abruptly in alarm.

On the grass laid a white figure clad in soft white robe. It was no other than prince Xiang Ning.

He Chang's gaze dropped in temperature as he stared at the prince who is on the ground. The prince, who had clearly grown to become a young adult at the age of 16 summers looked up pitifully at the man in front of him.

Those round eyes of his showed innocence one could never find anywhere else. His curled but moist eyelashes trembled as he hissed in pain from the collision of his body against the hard ground.

Truly, he looked like a bewitching ghost in the middle of the night. He Chang could not conceal the hatred in his eyes and just continued to watch solemnly as the small man struggled to stand up because of his injured ankle.

'Chang-ge...' cried out the prince.

He Chang bit his jaws as he finally walked forward and harshly grabbed the frail white wrist before pulling the prince up.

'Ouch!'

Xiang Ning exclaimed in pain. How come He Chang is being so rough to him? He had always known that his sister's closest bodyguard has never been fond of him. Though he never knew the reason why, Xiang Ning still admired this man.

He had seen how this same man was always so gentle with his sister and even saved her from assassins before. He loved his sister very much, so this man (HC) saving his sister is also equivalent to him (HC) saving himself (XN).

Even though He Chang would treat him harshly whenever his sister is not around, he still liked this older guy a lot.

He had always...been in love with this bodyguard of his big sister.

He Chang coldly let go of the prince as soon as he was back on his feet.

'What is his highness doing out here in the dark of night?' Asked He Chang without an ounce of warmth.

Xiang Ning tried to gulp in the tears that are threatening to fall.

'Chang-ge...need not worry. You can go protect jiejie. I will be fine on my own.' Said Xiang Ning with a pained smile.

Although he was raised in a sheltered closed-doors royal place, he had always known that the people around him considered him foolish. His emperor father had always been disgusted of him for his unnatural body.

Everybody said he's filthy and deranged. If it hadn't been for his sister's protection, he would've been living the cold palace since birth.

His birth mother was the most favored concubine of the emperor. Although she was from ordinary background, her beauty far exceeds other women in the empire. His father emperor took great likings to his mother and doted on her the most.

After she lost her life while giving birth to himself, his father emperor grew to hate him ever since he was a newborn. Coupled with his deformed body without a proper gender, his father emperor thought him to be a disgrace to the royal family and banished him to the cold palace.

At the time, his big sister who was the beloved daughter born to the empress took a pity to him. She brought him delicious warm foods everyday and as she grow older, she managed to persuade the emperor to release him from the cold palace.

Though still unfavored, he was the only prince of Chang'An, which was why the emperor decided to release from the cold palace.

This made Xiang Ning forever grateful for his jiejie. He knew full well that his Chang-ge is deeply in love with his big sister through some whispers of the palace maids in the inner palace.

Although deeply pained, Xiang Ning still could not bear to break apart the two. He could only watch from the sidelines as his most beloved He Chang treat his respected big sister so gently as if he was looking at his only treasure. Xiang Ning had accepted this fate from the beginning.

Once he heard the instruction from his big sister to let He Chang protect him, his little heart palpitated in joy. The first thought that came to mind was that he could spend more time with He Chang.

But the truth is far too cruel. He had seen how He Chang's face twisted in displeasure as soon as his big sister stepped away. At that moment, he did not want He Chang to come and be his bodyguard because the last thing he want is seeing his most loved person distressed.

Xiang Ning lowered his head and bit his ruddy red lips. His whole being is trembling from both the cold night wind and fear of the person standing imposingly in front of him.

He Chang narrowed his eyes as he stared at the imp in front of him. Surely, this prince is so beautiful that one would forget to breathe once they look at him.

However, because of this beautiful appearance that had caused dangers to befall on him all the time. For this one reason, had his beloved woman throw herself into danger every-time just to save this foolish younger brother of hers.

Thinking to this, He Chang felt his blood boiling again. He had always felt that this prince brings nothing but trouble. How useless!

Nevertheless, he would never disregard the princess's orders. If he was appointed to look after this stupid prince, then so be it. He can aways protect his princess from the dark.
