After the conversation with Vanessa, I felt relieved. I had managed to convince her that it was not my intention to ignore her and Lauren, but that I had forgotten to answer them because of my condition.

What was still there, however, was me feeling guilty. I knew what Lauren had to go through because of me. Even though it wasn't my fault that my health was disastrous at the time, I felt bad for forgetting.

I had forgotten about my friends. And to me, that already felt too wrong.

Me and Vanessa had agreed not to tell Lauren about our conversation yet. She was too tense and would hit back immediately even if it was totally unnecessary. So we decided to wait until the afternoon when we all had time and clear minds.

I made my way to the lecture hall. There I saw Vanessa and Lauren, who was clearly uncomfortable when I came in. It hurt but I tried to reassure myself with the hope that we would sort everything out later. It just had to work.

I sat down two rows behind the girls. After a few minutes, the room was full. The student council president stepped up to the lectern and waited until everyone sat down and it got quiet.

He was in his mid-50s with short dark blond hair. He was tall and had a lanky figure.

When he cleared his throat at the front, the rest of the conversations fell silent.

'' Dear students, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Park Vil University on behalf of your student council. My name is Henry Adams and I am one of many who will accompany you during your studies at PVU.

All of you have taken the first big step of your studies. By that I mean successful enrollment and, for many of you, the selection or aptitude testing process...''

I could hardly concentrate on the speech. All I did was stare at the back of Lauren's head. Her high ponytail tipped a little to the side as she tilted her head a bit.

I had actually only told Vanessa half the truth about me and Lauren before. I had told her about our phone call after the accident.

What I didn't tell her was that some other problems might have something to do with us not being friends anymore.

Maybe Lauren had already told her. She didn't explain it to me in any case.

But I don't think I needed any further explanation. I think it was clear to me what problems she meant.
