When I stormed out of the library, I didn't know where I was going. It didn't matter, the main thing was to get away from William and the drama that could have occurred as Vanessa joined in.

At some point I saw a platform on campus overlooking the lake. I sat down on a bench there and enjoyed the view. The quiet also allowed me to think back to what had happened.

William had been in a serious car accident about 2 years ago. What I understood from his best friend when he called me with this news was that he was traveling with his family and a wrong-way driver came towards them. When his father tried to swerve they went off the road and into a deep ditch. Thereupon the car overturned once.

Elias did not know anything about the state of health of William and his parents. He only knew that William and his mother were unconscious. He called me the night of the accident and was still unaware of the severity of the injuries. I asked him to keep me informed if he could and he promised to try. He would go to the hospital that day with his parents, who are both doctors, to be informed immediately.

In tears, I immediately called Vanessa to tell her about the incident. The next moment she was with me. My parents also joined us as my father was told by his boss what had happened. My father and William's father worked in the same company and had a very good friendship.

The incident spread quickly through our junior class and shocked many. William was very well liked because of his friendly and calm manner and there was no one involved in any problems with him to my knowledge.

Two days later I got another call from Elias. He told me that William's parents were both awake now. His father got off lightly with a broken arm and a few cuts.

His mother was also fine and had a moderate craniocerebral trauma, which can heal well after one or two weeks.

When Elias then wanted to talk about William, he came to a halt. He took a deep breath and began with a trembling voice. William had a severe craniocerebral trauma with a 30% chance of survival. He was in a coma and did not seem to be coming out of it soon. Elias claimed that the doctor expects severe long-term effects when he awakens. He may not be able to speak or walk again. But his condition was so bad that the doctor only focused on keeping him alive for the time being.

When Elias had finished speaking, it was difficult for me to say anything else. All I did was hold a hand over my mouth to suppress my cries.

Elias announced that he probably won't call anymore because he doesn't feel up to it.  He said he wanted to focus on himself and his mental health for now and prepare for the worst case scenario.
