"Yeah, if I'm so glad I'm not the main character in that book, I have no idea how to comfort people when they're crying,"
Your friend nodded her head,
"I know right! It's so awkward for everyone, but it's even worse to just ignore it,"
"Truth. Anyways, it was nice hanging out with you, thanks for agreeing to go shopping with me,"
"Anytime!"
The two of you parted ways, and you started on your trek home.
'What a nice sunset... I wish I could taste it...'
You continued to stare at the sherbet (I THOUGHT IT WAS 'sherbeRt'???) sky as you walked, which ended up leading you astray from the path home.
You decided to look around for any familiar landmarks, but couldn't seem to find any, although you did find a familiar person.
'Oikawa-senpai? I should ask him for directions,'
You watched for a moment as he walked up a light pole before bringing an arm to his eyes, a sob being heard.
'OH MY GOD HE'S CRYING'
You silently cursed at yourself for jinxing yourself earlier, and debated whether or not just to leave him be, but the words of your friend rang in your head, causing you to approach him.
He heard your footsteps approaching, and quickly wiped his tears away before facing you, hoping the slight darkness of the sky would hide his red eyes.
"O-oh! (N/n)-chan, what're you doing here?"
You started to internally panic.
'HE'S DENYING IT, WHAT DO I DO, ITS TOO OBVIOUS THAT HE WAS CRYING'
'HE PROBABLY KNOWS THAT YOU KNOW, JUST COMFORT HIM!'
'HOW?!'
'DONT ASK ME'
'THEN WHO DO I ASK???'
You were shakes from your thoughts,
"(N/n)-chan? Is everything alright?"
You looked deep into his eyes,
"I could ask you the same thing, senpai. Are you okay?"
He looked up, averting your gaze,
"I- Of course I am!"
He tried his absolute hardest, but he couldn't contain his sniffle.
"I know you're lying to me,"
It seemed like he wasn't going to give up the facade so easily. You sighed, crossing your arms,
"Look, it's alright if you don't want to tell me what's wrong, but I'm here for you if you need support, you know that, right?"
You could hear him hum in response, most likely thinking it was the safest thing to do, but everyone knows humming while on the brink of tears will expose you just as much as speaking.
You waited a few more moments to see if he'd break, but he regained silent.
"Well, I guess I'll see you around then,"
You started to walk away, but felt your arm being grabbed before you could walk too far away from him.
"W-wait. Don't go,"
You turned back towards him, and he brought his shaky gaze towards yours.
You extended your arms,
"You want a hug?"
He nodded his head before letting himself be held in your arms, letting out a shaky breath as he hugged you back.
"Could you... stay with me? Just for a little bit?"
He pulled away, wiping his face with his arm.
"Sure, just let me tell my parents really quickly,"
He nodded, and after a few moments, you walked into his home, then to his room.
He pulled you into another hug, and you could feel his tears beginning to stain your shoulder.
You hugged him back in silence for a bit longer before he pulled away,
"I'm gonna take a shower, wait here,"
He grabbed some clothes before heading out of the room, and you could soon hear the sound of the shower in a nearby bathroom.
You took this time to take a look at his room, taking note of the numerous volleyball related paraphernalia that littered his room.
That was only able to occupy you for a couple minutes, and soon you began to look through the items in your shopping bag.
you pulled out...
>an apple
'I'm not sure I should eat this now...'
>a sticker sheet
'I don't think he'd appreciate me vandalizing his room with stickers, even if they are amazing,'
>a book
'I could totally start reading this now! But I'm not really in the mood for reading right now...'
>Haikyuu! Volume 5
'Wait is that-?'
The book vanished out of your hands, and you soon forgot what you were even holding mere moments ago.
You heard the door open, and Oikawa in his pajamas came and sat next to you.
"I just don't get it... or maybe I just can't accept it,"
"Accept what?"
He sighed, his voice becoming shaky,
"That no matter how hard I practice, no matter how hard I try, I'm still not good enough to beat stupid Shiratorizawa..."
"You had a practice match today, didn't you?"
He nodded silently.
"That stupid Ushiwaka was so smug about it too! Gosh I hat that guy... you know what else I hate? How even with all this practice, I'm still gonna be outdone by 'prodigies' and 'talented athletes'"
He wiped away a tear that was threatening to spill,
"I just- I- I-I,"
He sighed, leaning his head on your shoulder,
"I don't know what to do. For so long I've wanted to go pro with volleyball, but things like this... they just..."
"Do you want comfort or advice?"
After a brief moment, he answered,
"Comfort please. I think I just want to stay like this for a while,"
"Okay,"
Eventually his breathing began to slow down to a normal pace, tears no longer flowing from his eyes, and his sniffling subsided as well.
And soon enough he was back to his usual self
"Wow (n/n)-chan, where'd you learn how to do all that? You're a natural!"
'HE'S LYING'
"I'm not really sure. I just wanted to do whatever I could to help you feel better, Oikawa-senpai,"
You felt your phone vibrate, and looked to see a text from your parents.
"Oh crap, I've gotta get home!"
You stood up, going for the door before turning your head back to the setter,
"Will you be alright, senpai?"
"I'll be fine, Iwa-chan's coming over soon anyways,"
You nodded and made your way to the front door, putting your shoes on.
"Wait!"
You looked to the brown haired setter.
"(L/n)... thank you,"
You gave him a smile,
"Anytime!"
Then you ran like hell back home, hoping your parents wouldn't be too mad.
